Men's Basketball

Longwell, Coppola and Davis Help Men's Basketball Survive Trip to Husson

Bangor, ME --- The WPI men's basketball team saw a 18-point second half lead evaporate but Marco Coppola (Watertown, MA) canned two free throws with 38 seconds left to force overtime and the Engineers outscored host Husson 13-9 in the extra frame to defeat the host Eagles 89-85 on Saturday afternoon.

WPI is now 7-0 for the second straight year and the fourth time under 12th-year head coach Chris Bartley.  Husson is 1-2 on the season and was playing the Engineers at home for the first time after falling in Worcester in the 2009 NCAA Tournament and in the 2011-12 season opener.

Sophomore guards Sam Longwell (Acton, MA) and Coppola posted 25 and 24 points respectively for the Boynton Hillers while freshman point guard Aaron Davis (Marshfield, MA) joined Longwell in establishing a new career-high with 14 points. The trio also combined for 14 of WPI's 15 assists on the day.

WPI overcame a 34-26 deficit on the boards by shooting 51.7% from the floor and converting 23 Eagle turnovers into 20 points.

Husson received 23 points from senior guard Eric Modica (Kittery, ME), who turned in a 12-of-13 performance from the free throw line.  As a team, the Eagles canned 31-of-36 attempts (81.6%)  from the  charity stripe a game after Lasell hit all 16 of its attempts versus the Engineers.  Classmate Wes Murphy (New York, NY) led all reserves with 15 points off the bench for the hosts.

WPI is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Salem State for a 7pm non-conference tilt.
