Cambridge, MA --- The WPI Women's Swimming and Diving team began competition Friday in the three-day NEWMAC Championships at MIT. 

The Engineers saw a record setting performance in the opening event of the night session as the 200-yard freestyle relay of Alana Aubin (Taunton, MA), Kelin Song (Providence, RI), Jess Lopez (Palmer, MA) and Alexandra Sanz-Guerrero (Ann Arbor, MI) eclipsed the old mark by nearly a second with a time of 1:42.38 en route to a ninth-place finish.  Oddly enough, the old record of 1:43.02 was set last year at the NEWMAC Championships with Aubin, Lopez and Sanz-Guerrero all in on the old mark.  The B relay team foursome of Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA), Jetta Garrity (Lynn, MA) and Sarah Dinwoodie (East Greenwich, RI) was 17th (1:45.47). 

Kent turned in a 12th place time in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.23.  The sophomore narrowly missed the championship final with a 5:14.72 swim during the morning.  Song also made the B finals, clocking a time of 2:18.74 to finish 16th. 

Aubin was WPI's top finisher in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking a 25.44 in the morning to finish 23rd.  Nica Sylvia (Martha's Vineyard, MA) placed 12th in the 1-meter diving with a score of 354.35. 

In the final event of the night, Toni LaBella (Warwick, RI), Garrity, Kent and Sanz-Guerrero turned in a 18th place showing in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 4:19.93.  

The NEWMAC Championships continue at MIT on Saturday with the morning preliminaries at 10am and the finals at 6:30pm.
