Kent and Dinwoodie Highlight Women's Swim Dive at Day Two of NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, MA --- Sophomore Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) and junior Sarah Dinwoodie (East Greenwich, RI) participated in championship finals Saturday evening to highlight WPI's showing in the second day of the NEWMAC Championships hosted by MIT.  It was a solid all-around day for the Engineers, who moved up two spots to eighth place in the team standings. 

Kent posted a fourth place finish in the 400-yard IM in a time of 4:41.60 while Dinwoodie was eight in 100-yard backstroke with a 1:01.06.  Senior Alana Aubin (Taunton, MA) won the B finals of 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.17 while Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY) swam in a pair of B finals on Saturday.  The junior was 16th in 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke with times of 1:04.01 and 1:03.30 respectively.   

The WPI relay teams had a strong night.  In session-opening  200-yard medley relay, the A relay team of Peruffo, Jetta Garrity (Lynn, MA), Aubin and Dinwoodie finished ninth (1:55.79) while the B relay of Toni LaBella (Warwick, RI), Erin Heckley (Tyngsboro, MA), Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA) and Jess Shelsky (Nashua, NH) was 18th (2:00.40).  The Engineers closed the night with great swims in the 800-yard freestyle relay.  The A relay team of Aubin, Jess Lopez (Palmer, MA), Alexandra Sanz-Guerrero (Ann Arbor, MI) and Kent was seventh (8:07.88) while the B relay tandem of Kelin Song (Providence, RI), Heckley, Briseno and Dinwoodie was (8:20.71). 

Earlier Saturday diver Nica Sylvia (Martha's Vineyard, MA) registered her second 12th place finish of the championships.  Lopez turned in the Crimson and Gray's best showing in the 200-yard freestyle.  The junior touched the wall in 18th place in a time of 2:01.19.  Senior Jetta Garrity (Lynn, MA) clocked a time of 1:14.73 en route to a 31st place time in the 100-yard breaststroke. 

The NEWMAC Championships conclude Sunday.  The morning session begins at 10:30am with the finals at 6:30pm at MIT.
