Worcester, MA - Mary Donahue (Braintree, MA) exploded for 16 kills to lead Babson to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-20) win over host WPI in NEWMAC Women's Volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the Harrington Auditorium. The Beavers of Babson are now 7-2 with a 2-0 mark in the conference standings while the Engineers of WPI drop to 6-4 overall and 0-2 against NEWMAC opponents.
Donahue hit .500 on the day with only two errors. Senior setter Kathleen Lynch (Quincy, MA) also had a stellar day for Babson, racking up 28 set assists. Lynch passed the 3,000 career assists mark midway through the third set, all while chipping in five points and five digs. Kseniya Stepanova (Upland, CA) led the defense with 15 digs. Krissy Robertson (Dedham, MA) contributed 7.5 points, including three block assists.
For WPI, Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) led with 12 kills and a .409 kill percentage. Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) added eight kills and seven digs. Alex Rangel (Weston, FL) had a match-high four service aces and 11 set assists. Alyssa Fidanza (Ellington, CT) finished with 16 set assists, and Lauren D' Angelo (Wallingford, CT) tallied 15 digs.
The tone of the match was set early in the first set, when the Beavers scored five straight points off the serve of Lynch to take an 8-3 lead. The Crimson and Gray made runs to narrow the gap throughout the match, only to watch Babson regain control as Lynch combined with Donahue repeatedly to end the threat.
Both teams continue their NEWMAC schedule on Tuesday evening at 7pm. WPI entertains Mount Holyoke at home while Babson heads to Wheaton for match three of a four-date road trip.
