Men's Swimming and Diving Sweeps Visiting Regis and Roger Williams

Worcester, MA --- The WPI men's swimming and diving team made a splash Saturday afternoon, sweeping Regis and Roger Williams in a double-dual meet at the WPI Sports and Recreation Center. WPI outscored Roger Williams 189-108, and defeated Regis 215-28. In the third contest, Roger Williams topped Regis, 210-37. 

The Crimson and Gray saw four athletes take home two individual victories. Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) raced to first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.88) and 100-yard freestyle (48.84). The freshman also anchored two winning relay teams for the Crimson and Gray. 

Sophomore Nick Houghton (Berkley, MA) prevailed in the distance events, taking the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:15.59 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:56.24.

Freshman Alex Powers (Glocester, RI) reached the wall first in the 100-yard (53.58) and 200-yard (1:58.12) backstroke events, as well as grabbing fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (57.13). 

Sophomore Adam McNally (Leominster, MA) made his debut as Engineer a triumphant one, winning both the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.86) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.16). McNally also collected second place in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.19). 

John Kilfoil (Bourne, MA) earned victory in 3-meter diving, scoring 129.67 points. Ed Lukowski (Auburn, NY) took second (116.62), narrowly beating out Ben Andrews (Bristol, CT) (116.55). In 1-meter diving, the trio placed third (140.10), fourth (136.50), and fifth (129.08), respectively. 

WPI took first and third place in both relays on the day. Ben List (Bedford, MA) and James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY) joined McNally and Hughes to secure first place in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:40.40. Individually, sophomore List took first in the 100-yard butterfly (54.32) and second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.79). Perez-Rogers touched third in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 57.62. 

The team of Keahi Goodale (Kailua-Kona, HI), Tyler Greff (Lincoln Park, NJ), Spencer Coffin (Poughkeepsie, NY), and Adam Trumbley (Prospect, CT) touched third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.36). Goodale took fourth in three events; the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.24), the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.77), and 200-yard individual medley (2:12.33). Greff placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.65), while Coffin did the same in the 100-yard butterfly (56.74). The senior also picked up fourth place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.40), while sophomore Trumbley matched that finish in the 100-yard freestyle (51.35). 

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Ben Collins (Newbury, MA) and Trumbley combined with Powers and Hughes to earn the win in 3:18.37. Cullen O'Brien (Bar Harbor, ME), Jon Decelle (Rumson, NJ), Tommy Nuthmann (Hillsboro, OR), and List captured third in 3:26.78. Decelle brought 1-2 finishes to the Crimson and Gray by placing second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.84) and 500-yard freestyle (5:04.84). Collins sprinted to third place in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.58, and O'Brien swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.98, good for fourth place.

Max Arnold (Charlton, MA) had two top finishes for the Crimson and Gray, earning third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.27) and 200-yard individual medley (2:08.38). Joon-Ho Lee (Hampstead, NH) secured fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:59.02. 

WPI competes again next Friday and Saturday at home. The Engineers will host Holy Cross and Clark in the quest to take back the Worcester City Championship. The team is currently 4-3 for the season.
