Nikolaki Sets a School Record as Women's Swimming and Diving Tops Brandeis

Waltham, MA --- WPI women's swimming and diving improved its record to 7-3 with a 163-95 win over Brandeis on Saturday afternoon.  Today's win marks the first in WPI women's swimming and diving history versus Brandeis.  

Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) won the mid-distance freestyles, taking the 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.25 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:40.11. The junior also had the fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:24.92). Jess Lopez (Palmer, MA) swam a season-best time of 5:47.16 for a second place finish in the 500, and fellow senior Alexandra Sanz-Guerrero (Ann Arbor, MI) took third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:16.31). Danielle Healy (Cohasset, MA) got to the wall third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:37.81).

Nysa Casha (Andover, MA) matched Kent with three individual wins, including a season-best time of 2:33.74 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Additionally, the sophomore led the way in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.23) and 100-yard freestyle (59.36).  Lopez followed closely behind Casha in the 100-yard freestyle (59.51), while Kelsey Wall (Marshfield, MA) picked up third place in both the 100-yard (1:18.83) and 200-yard (2:50.27) breaststrokes.

Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) earned herself a victory in 1-meter diving with an NCAA-qualifying score of 478.75 for 11 dives. Nikolaki posts a new school record that smashes the old school record by 40 points and the NCAA Standard by 55.  Sam Sargalski (Windsor, CT) picked up third in the event with 316.40 points.

The 200-yard butterfly was swept by the Crimson and Gray, with Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA) turning in the top time of 2:26.82. She was followed by Kelin Song (Providence, RI) and Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY) in second (2:35.97) and third (2:41.02). Briseno also grabbed third place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.80), which was won by Engineer freshman Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA) in 1:05.80.

Danielle Healy (Cohasset, MA) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 12:16.07, and Jenny Biener (Wilmington, DE) took second (13:25.16).  In the 100-yard backstroke, Peruffo grabbed second (1:07.46) while fellow senior Lopez came in third (1:08.95). The 200-yard backstroke saw Konieczny in third (2:26.44), but she picked up second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.82), ahead of classmate Kayla DeSanty (Holden, MA) in 29.27.

The WPI women hit the wall first in both relays of the day. The team of Song, Casha, Konieczny, and Lopez won the 200-yard medley relay in 2:01.59. Konieczny, Casha, and Lopez were joined by Kent to finish first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:50.56).

The Engineers host crosstown rival Clark next Wednesday in their penultimate dual meet of the year.
