Volleyball Suffers 3-0 Setback at NEWMAC Foe Babson

Babson Park, MA --- Sophomore Mary Donahue (Braintree, MA) had a match-high eight kills while classmate Krissy Robertson (Dedham, MA) led all players with 14 assists and five service errors helping Babson College to a straight-set, 25-12, 25-19, 25-9, victory over WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's volleyball match at Staake Gymnasium on Tuesday night. 

With its fifth consecutive win, Babson is now 14-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference while WPI drops to 6-14 on the year and 0-6 in the NEWMAC. 

First-years Lorraine Mackiewicz (Edison, NJ) and Brittany Goldschmidt (Delray Beach, FL) had five and four kills, respectively, and junior Brianna San Diego (Daly City, FL) collected a match-high nine digs. Sophomore Angela Price (Medway, MA) contributed nine assists, while senior Karla Flores (San Juan, PR) and sophomore Elizabeth Sullivan (Quincy, MA) each chipped in with seven digs. 

Senior Holly Gasner (Seward, AK) and first-year Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) led WPI with four kills apice. First-year Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA) had a team-high 10 assists while senior Sarah Cook (New Paltz, NY) and first-year Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) each contributed seven digs to lead the Engineers. 

The Beavers cruised to an easy victory in the first set, taking a 13-1 lead out of the gate and using 12 kills and eight service aces on its way to a 1-0 lead. WPI hung tough in game two, pulling even at 9-9 behind two kills from Ganser and another from Werth before a 13-5 spurt gave the Green and White a 20-14 lead. Babson got a trio of service aces from sophomore Mary Martin (East Haddam, Conn.) and took advantage of five WPI errors to take a two-set advantage. 

Just as they had in the opening set, the Beavers started fast in game three, scoring the first five points before opening a 15-5 lead to force an Engineers timeout. Babson registered nine kills and five aces to close out the victory, its eighth straight at home. 

Babson will be back in action on Saturday when they open the UMass-Boston Invitational with a 10 a.m. match against Colby-Sawyer, while WPI will host Smith in a NEWMAC contest on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
