Women's Swimming and Diving Falls in Road Meet Against Roger Williams

Bristol, RI --- The WPI women's swimming and diving team fell for just the second time this season on Friday at Roger Williams, losing to the Hawks (3-2) by a final tally of 146-134. 

Sophomore Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) picked up two of seven event victories for WPI (5-2), taking easy wins in the 1-meter dive (273.83) and 3-meter dive (232.94). 

Freshman Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) was also active, winning the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.09) and swimming the opening leg of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43.08), which also included classmates Tori Claverie (Derry, NH) and Heather Stratica (Wappingers, NY) and sophomore anchor Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA). Along with her wins, Martin also came in second in the 50-yard butterfly (28.54) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.96). 

Konieczny also had a solo win in the 100-yard freestryle (57.01), edging teammates Eva Childers (Henniker, NH), who finished in 57.06 and Claverie (57.08) in third place. 

Childers, a freshman, was the top finisher in the 500-yard freestyle (5:32.26) and joined Claverie, freshman Marissa Patterson (Hampton Falls, NH) and junior Nysa Casha (Andover, MA) on the second-place 200-yard medley relay team, finishing 1.38 seconds off the lead in 1:57.65. 

Patterson had the final victory for WPI in the 50-yard backstroke (29.47) and also claimed another second place in a competitive 100-yard backstroke (1:02.84) 

Casha finished second four times overall, also coming in runner-up in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.78), 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.84) and 400-yard individual medley (4:55.35). 

Claverie lost the 50-yard freestyle (25.93) to Roger Williams' Kristen Grandonico (Portland, ME) by one-hundredth of a second. 

Senior captain Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:17.89). 

The women's swimming and diving team will have two weeks off before hosting the two-day WPI Invitational, which starts Saturday, Dec. 7, at 9am.
