Women's Swimming and Diving Sweeps Smith, Babson and Brandeis

Worcester, MA --- Meet host WPI took seven event victories, including six involving freshmen Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) and Eva Childers (Henniker, NH), as the Engineers (4-0) took victories over all three opponents in a quad-meet on held on Saturday afternoon, beating Smith (2-1), 182-118, Babson (2-3) by a score of 217-77 and Brandeis (0-4) by a count of 226-46. 

Martin won the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.45) and 200-yard butterfly (2:16.92), finishing ahead of senior Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA) both times. Martin also took part in the winning 400-yard medley relay team, which also included Marissa Patterson (Hampton Falls, NH), Nysa Casha (Andover, MA) and Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA), winning in 4:15.20. 

Martin's final win came as the anchor of the 200-yard freestyle relay team, which also included, Casha, Childers, and Tori Claverie (Derry, NH). The Engineers came in with a winning time of 1:44.34. 

Childers claimed first place in the 100-yard freestyle (56.82) as WPI took the top three spots

Senior Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) had the only WPI win independent of Martin or Chivers, emerging victorious in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:55.45. 

Smith won six events and had a pair of double-winners as senior Olivia Bannon (Amherst, MA) came in first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.02) and 200-yard backstroke (2:32.86) and sophomore Cecelia Arrison (Weathersfield, VT) won the 1-meter dive (251.50) and 3-meter dive (274.05). 

WPI sophomore Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) came in second in both the 1-meter (242.85) and 3-meter (234.75).

Smith junior Emily Lane (Centennial, CO) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:55.39), while sophomore teammate Claire Dudek (Bethesda, MD) finished a close second in 11:55.85. 

Babson only won three events, but still had a triple-winner as junior Erica Ricciardi (Los Angeles, CA) took the 50-yard freestyle (25.20), 100-yard backstroke (1:01.71) and 200-yard backstroke (2:13.80). 

Freshman Joanna Murphy (Sarasota, Fla.) claimed a win in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.57) for Brandeis. 

The Engineers will return to action at 6pm Friday in a tri-meet involving Coast Guard and meet host Division I Providence. Smith heads to Springfield on Tuesday for a 7pm dual meet while Babson hosts Norwich and Brandeis entertains Wesleyan on Saturday at 1pm.
