Men's Swimming and Diving Strong on Day Two of NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, MA --- For the second consecutive night, the WPI men's swimming and diving team had a relay earn All-NEWMAC status at the conference meet at MIT.  On Saturday it was the 200-yard medley of  Alex Powers (Glocester, RI), Tyler Greff (Lincoln Park, NJ), Ben List (Bedford, MA) and Adam Trumbley (Prospect, CT) that finished second in a school record time of 1:34.85.  After two days WPI sits in fourth place, just four points behind third place Coast Guard. 

The Engineers had three swimmers make the championship finals in the 400-yard IM.  Adam McNally (Leominster, MA) set a school record with a time of 4:07.73 en route to finishing fourth.  Nick Houghton (Berkley, MA) was just behind in fifth (4:10.12) while Max Arnold (Charlton, MA) placed eighth (4:19.91).  Keahi Goodale (Kailua-Kona, HI) also swam Saturday night, clocking a time of 4:27.35 to finish 13th. 

Power placed third in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 51.57.  James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY) turned in a seventh place finish in the event, posting a 53.77. Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) also was credited with a seventh place showing on the night, his in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.38. 

WPI was busy in the 100-yard breaststroke.  Greff (58.62) and Arnold (1:00.14) finished seventh and nine respectively while Keith Gagnon (West Hartford, CT) added a 14th place time (1:01.75) and Tom Graf (Pittsburgh, PA) was an alternate for the finals with an 18th place finish in the morning (1:02.90). 

List was 11th (52.84) in the 100-yard butterfly while Perez-Rogers (53.30) and Mitch Lentz (Edina, MN) (53.34) went back-to-back in 15th and 16th and Spencer Coffin (Poughkeepsie, NY) alternate for the evening sessions with a 18th place showing in the preliminaries (54.00). 

Finally, the 800-yard freestyle relay set a school record with the foursome of Powers, List, Houghton and Hughes touching the wall in 7:01.03 to finish fourth.  In the race, Powers set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle after his leadoff leg. 

Day three will commence Sunday at 10am with the preliminary heats of the women's 200-yard backstroke. That will be followed by the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 400-yard freestyle relay and the 1650-yard freestyle. The consolation and championship finals for these events, as well as the finals for women's 3-meter and men's 1-meter diving, will take place tomorrow night, starting at 6pm.
