Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Amy Misera (Hunt Valley, MD) scored 3:13 into the second overtime to lift WPI Field Hockey to a 2-1 victory over visiting Lasell in each team's respective season opener on Saturday in a non-conference game played at Alumni Field.
With the game knotted at one-all heading into the second overtime session, Misera took two of the Engineers four shots on net before she deposited a feed from classmate Shannon Rice (Bath, ME) following a frantic rally at the top of the circle.
Lasell freshman Katelyn Dombrowski (Newington, CT) put the Lasers ahead early when she knocked home a rebound off a shot initially taken by senior Ainslee Thompson (Allendale, NJ) at 5:39 into the contest. Each side took six shots in the opening frame while Lasell was awarded five of the nine penalty corners.
WPI evened the game 10:43 into the second half when junior Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, MA) deposited a feed from freshman Mikayla Bolduc (Skowhegan, ME) for her 12th career tally. WPI fired four of the five shots in the second half while neither team had a penalty corner.
Richardson rifled off a quartet of shots in the first extra session with the best attempt coming at the 4:14 mark. Earlier in the frame, Lasell senior Samantha Smithers (Yarmouth, MA) raced down the field but was eventually thwarted by Bolduc before she could take a shot. WPI sophomore Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA) and Rice also attempted to end the game but were stopped by senior netminder Taylor Sheehan (Brewster, MA) in the initial overtime period.
For the game, WPI outshot Lasell 21-7, including 11-0 in the overtime sessions, and were awarded eight of the 13 corners.
Senior netminder Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) was called upon to make five stops en route to her 20th career victory. Sheehan halted three shots in regulation and seven in overtime for the guests.
WPI ventures to Bridgewater State on Tuesday for a 7pm tilt. Lasell travels to Wheelock for an 8pm contest on Thursday.
