Collegeville, PA --- Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH) won all four of his matches and Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, CT) and Alex Freilich (Worcester, MA) both notched three victories each as the WPI Wrestling team went 3-1 Saturday at the North-South Duals hosted by Ursinus on Saturday.
WPI, who is now 4-5 on the season, won its first three matches, defeating Elizabethtown (33-9), Gettysburg (36-15) and McDaniel (33-15) before falling to US Merchant Marine 27-10 in the finale.
The Engineers claimed seven bouts in the opener against the Blue Jays, dropping only a trio of 3-point decisions. Freilich had a second period pin at 184 pounds while Tilbe posted a 14-3 major decision at 141. Perruccio and Brian Amato (Newington, CT) garnered decisions at 141 and 125 respectively while Justin Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA), Teddy Kostopoulos (Milford, CT) and Peter Salem (Dracut, MA) were credited with forfeits at 174, 197 and heavyweight.
WPI won six of the first seven bouts versus the Gettysburg. Amato got things started with a forfeit before Brian Jennings (Danbury, CT) tallied a pin at 133 pounds. After the Bullets took a 3-2 win at 141, the Crimson and Gray rattled off four straight wins to secure the victory. Perruccio and 157-pounder Zachary Rahl (Pittsgrove, NJ) got the spurt started with a pair of wins by decisions before Austin Brais (Plainville, MA) registered a fall at 165 and Zonfrelli took a forfeit at 174. Freilich showed over his versatility by posting a pin at 197 to close out the WPI scoring.
Against McDaniel, the Engineers flexed their muscle in the later bouts with Marsh, Freilich and Kostopoulos all posting first period pins as the Boynton Hillers took 18 points from 174, 184 and 197. Tilbe grinded out a 5-3 sudden victory at 141 while Perruccio and Brais tallied wins by decision and Amato took home a forfeit.
In its final match of the day, the Merchant Marine rallied from 10-3 deficit to take the matchup by winning the final six bouts. WPI received a major decision from Jennings at 133 pounds. and decision by Tilbe and Perruccio at 141 and 149.
WPI is back on the mat next Saturday at 11am when they travel to Trinity for a quad with Roger Williams and Wesleyan.
