Trumbley and Powers Claim Wins for Men's Swimming and Diving at Wheaton

Norton, MA --- The WPI men's swimming and diving team emerged from Saturday's Wheaton Invitational with a pair of wins in an unscored meet, as junior Adam Trumbley (Prospect, CT) snagged the 50-yard freestyle in 22.17, sophomore Alex Powers (Glocester, RI) the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.07).

Trumbley had a well-rounded day, also snagging third in 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.21), and fifth in 100-yard freestyle (49.51). Trumbley (22.16) also led a 1-2-3 WPI finish in the mixed 50-yard time trial, edging rookie teammate Bryan Adie (Southington, CT) in 23.18, and Eric Schattschneider (Chappaqua, NY) in 23.24.

The versatile Trumbley was also a member of all of the Engineers' top relay teams, joining on the third-place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:30.83) with Adie, Schattschneider, and freshman Matt Puksta (Nashua, NH). Trumbley was also in on the fourth-place 400-yard medley relay (3:50.95), along with freshman Phineas O'Brien-Milne (Gettysburg, PA), Puksta, and Evan Pilaar (Mahwah, NJ), and the fifth-place 200-yard medley relay (1:43.95) with O'Brien-Milne, Puksta, Pilaar. Trumbley featured in a fourth relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay in which WPI finished fifth (3:30.30) with a team also including sophomore Tom Cieslewski (Watertown, CT) Schattschneider and Adie.

Pilaar also had a notable meet, taking third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.02), coming in one spot ahead of a fourth-place Puksta (2:08.83). Pilaar was in another 3-4 finish in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in 2:03.12, just ahead of freshman Richard Coffin (Pleasant Valley, NY) with a time of 2:08.90. Pilaar also came in fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (57.02) and the 100-yard butterfly (55.93), exceeding expectations after being seeded to finish seventh.

Puksta claimed second in 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.96) as WPI had three of the top five finishers. Trumbley came in fourth (1:03.49) and Adie fifth (1:04.81).

Powers had a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.73), as did Coffin in the 1,000-yard mixed freestyle (11:09.05), while senior teammate Tyler Faszewski (Hooksett, ME) finished fifth (11:12.86) in the same event.

Freshman Matt Suarez (Needham, MA) placed third in both diving events.  He posted a 244.45 in the 1-meter event and registered a 222.35 off the 3-meter board.

Cieslewski rounded out the meet with fifth in 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.41.

The Engineers won't be back in competitive action until the four-day NEWMAC Championship meet, hosted by WPI from Thursday, Feb. 20 through Sunday.
