Box Score 2 Weston, MA --- WPI dropped a pair of hard fought 3-2 matches Saturday during the second day of the Regis College Pride Invite. The Crimson and Gray fell to Gordon (25-18, 26-28, 17-25, 25-21, 18-16) in the semifinals before suffering a setback to Becker (25-20, 13-25, 13-25, 25-18, 15-9) in the consolation round. Despite the pair of losses, the Engineers (2-2) placed third in the six tournament after winning a pair of matches on Friday to claim Pool A.
Gordon came back from a 2-1 set deficit in the first match. The Fighting Scots led 13-5 in the fifth and deciding set but saw the Engineers claim 10 of the next 11 points to seize a 15-14 advantage. It looked like WPI had won the match on the ensuing point and had streamed onto the court but a late call by the chair umpire evened the match at 15. After the two teams traded kills, Maggie Risma (Hudson, OH) served a pair of aces to put the Fighting Scots into the championship round.
Gordon had a trio of players with double-digit kills as Laura Schmidt (Stuart, FL) led the squad with 13, while adding three digs and two service aces. Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, IA) and Jenna Labbadia (Berlin, CT) also contributed with 11 kills apiece. Joy Kimmel (Madison, CT) doled out a game-high 38 assists, while Risma led the Gordon defense with a game-high 28 digs and chipped in with a game-high nine service aces.
The Engineers offense was led by Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA), who had a game-high 15 kills while also contributing 11 digs on defense. Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) played an all-around game registering 10 kills, a team-high 22 digs and added four service aces. Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA) dished out a team-high 27 assists while also adding 10 digs and a service ace.
In the nightcap, Becker rallied back to take the last two sets and earned its first victory of the season by defeating WPI 3-2. The Hawks were led by the duo of Kristi Hadzewycz (Daytona Beach, FL.) and Marissa Turner (Coventry, RI), who had 11 kills apiece. Hadzewycz also contributed with nine digs and five service aces. Turner starred on defense by racking up a team-high 17 digs and a game-high four blocks. Charlene Landry (Gorham, ME) helped the Hawks cause with eight digs and a game-high 27 assists.
WPI's offense was led by Katie Hurlock (Burlington, CT), who had nine kills and also contributed on defense by adding three blocks, two digs and two assists. Gyneth Campbell (Albany, NY) had a game-high 10 service aces along with six kills and nine digs. Brianna Parent (Epping, NH) recorded a game-high 23 digs. Emma Sheils (Shirley, Mass.) added a team-high 12 assists and also contributed three digs, two service aces and one kill.
MIT won the tournament by going 4-0 over the two day event. The Engineers were led by Tournament MVP Megan Gebhard (Howell, MI), who posted 38 kills and hit .533 during the tournament.
Joining her on the All-Tournament Team from MIT was Allie Davanzo (St. Johns, FL), Gordon's Kimmel, WPI's Wallace. Regis', Gracie Molinari (Fort Lauderdale, FL), Eastern Nazarene's Kortney Jenkins (Bunker Hill, WV), and Becker's Turner.
WPI is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to nearby Paxton to face Anna Maria at 7pm.
