Worcester, MA --- Justin Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) went 3-0 to highlight eight WPI wrestlers with multiple victories as the Engineers went 2-1 Saturday in a home quad match in the Sports & Recreation Center.
WPI improves to 10-12 on the season by defeating Bridgewater State 26-13 and Daniel Webster 46-6. In the middle session the Crimson and Gray fell to Rhode Island College 27-18.
The Engineers trailed 7-3 in their opening match with Bridgewater State but strung together six straight wins to garner the win. Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, CT) got the run started with a 16-0 tech fall at 19 pounds before Tanner Burke (Derry, NH) added a second consecutive extra point win with a 11- major decision at 157. From there the host alternated wins by decision and major decisions with Andy Tanner (Danville, NH) claiming a 3-1 sudden victory at 165, Marsh claiming a 16-2 triumph at 174, Lucas Muntz (West Hartford, CT) posting a 7-4 decision at 7-4 and Teddy Kostopoulos (Devon, CT) closed the spurt with a 10-2 victory at 197.
Brian Amato (Newington, CT), who had opened the match with Bears with a 8-1 win at 125 pounds, got the Engineers six points via a forfeit in the opening bout against Rhode Island College. Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI) pushed the bulge to 9-0 following a thrilling 9-8 victory at 133 before RIC took home the next three matches to go ahead 13-9. WPI answered right back as Anton Libsch (Milton, MA) posted a 6-1 win at 165 and Marsh pinned his opponent with just 13 seconds left in a match of regionally-ranked wrestlers at 174 but the visiting Anchormen took the last three bouts to record the win.
After a no contest at 125 pounds, WPI amassed wins in the next eight bouts versus Daniel Webster. Jack Nigro (Closter, NJ) and Muntz collected pins at 141 and 184 respectively while Jendritz, Tilbe, Burke, Tanner and Marsh all hand their hands raised with six-point victories and Kostopoulos took home a 12-1 major decision at 197.
Prior to the match, Tilbe, Tanner, Kostopoulos, Eli Wolfang (Warren, RI) and Andres Pedraza-Rayo (Mamaroneck, NY) were recognized as part of Senior Day festivities.
WPI concludes the head-to-head portion of its schedule next Saturday with a tri-meet at Williams with Springfield. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 1pm.
