Box Score WORCESTER -- Senior Greg Singer (San Jose, CA) scored with 3:16 left in the second overtime to lift nationally-ranked Amherst to a 2-1 victory over host WPI Wednesday night at Alumni Stadium.
The Lord Jeffs (7-0), who are ranked fourth by the NSCAA and fifth by D3soccer.com, remain undefeated on the season while the Engineers, who are receiving votes in the D3soccer.com Men's Top 25 and ranked sixth in the NSCAA NCAA Division III New England poll, move to 8-2-1.
Junior Christopher Martin (Philadelphia, PA) carried the ball up the field and dished it to Singer for the game-ender. Each side mustered a shot earlier in the extra sessions as junior Jackson Lehnhart's (Juneau, AK) bid went wide right in the 92nd minute and senior Brien Hard (New Hartford, CT) had an attempt blocked in the 105th minute.
Amherst senior Milton Rico (Philadelphia, PA) opened the scoring when he fired home a deflection in the 14th minute. Nearly three minutes later, junior Nate Peterson (Mashpee, MA) headed in a long throw in from senior Chris Murray (Canton, MA) to even the match in the at 16:39.
Defensively, senior Thomas Bull (Montgomery, NJ) made a charging stop on a shot by sophomore Anthony Vigliotta (Beverly, MA) in the 29th minute. Later in the game, sophomore Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) had an opportunity to finish off a scrum with a bicycle kick from close range in the 82nd minute, but the ball went right. The Amherst keeper finished with a pair of saves on the night as sophomore Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) came up with three stops for the Engineers.
The Lord Jeffs enjoyed an 18-11 margin in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Amherst also had a 5-3 advantage in corners.
WPI hosts Emerson Saturday at 4pm while the Lord Jeffs face defending national champion Tufts at 2:30pm.
