Bender Breaks WPI Women's Diving Records in Double Dual Sweep of Wheaton and UMass Dartmouth

WORCESTER – Junior Kristen Bender (Simi Valley, CA) broke both dual meet diving records while freshmen Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) and Sofia de Oliveira (Portland, ME) each won a pair of individual events as the WPI women's swimming and diving team posted the best result in every event during a double dual with Wheaton and UMass Dartmouth Wednesday night in the Sports & Recreation Center. Senior Emily Martin (Penfield. NY) and junior Jennifer Day (Chelmsford, MA) also earned gold in a pair of swims.

When the scores were tallied, the Engineers (6-7) defeated the Lyons 162-91 and the Corsairs 180-53 while Wheaton (8-4) topped UMass Dartmouth (4-3) 198-50.

Bender unseated All-America Veronica Nikolaki as the record holder in the 1-meter with a score of 299.35 and the 3-meter with a score of 294.70. The previous marks were 286.10 and 276.25, respectively. Seo secured the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes with times of 1:03.93 and 2:17.17 while de Oliveria touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.68) and 100-yard butterfly (1:01.40), in addition to swimming the second leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay. She was teamed with freshman Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY), junior Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) and Martin which handed in a 1:42.89 in the final event of the night. Martin had individual success in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles with times of 55.70 and 1:59.93. Day, meanwhile, took the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.58) and 500-yard freestyle (5:18.58).

Senior Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH), Grant, freshman Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) and junior Thea Reymann (Toms River, NJ) opened the night with a winning time of 4:11.59 in the 400-yard medley relay. Grant went on to secure the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.02). Three other freshmen tasted success as Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:55.56), Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) took the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.25) and Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) seized the 200-yard IM (2:19.14).

The Engineers return to action Saturday for a 1pm dual at Hartwick.
