WORCESTER – WPI sophomore Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) won three times in Wrestling's home meet versus No. 3 Johnson & Wales, Southern Maine and No. 15 Brockport. The Engineers fell to the Wildcats 39-6, the Huskies 22-15 and the Golden Eagles 28-11.
Wensley gave the Engineers the early lead in all three matches as he took a 9-6 decision against Johnson & Wales with a late scoring move, a 13-5 major decision versus Southern Maine and a 5-2 decision against Brockport. Freshman Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) had success versus the Wildcats with a 9-2 decision at 149.
In the middle match, WPI and Southern Maine traded bout victories until the Huskies reeled off four to take the 22-12 lead with one remaining. After Wensley picked up his major decision, sophomore Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) added another by a count of 10-2 in a match-up of regionally-ranked wrestlers at 285. Later in the match, junior Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI) secured a 10-0 major decision at 133. Senior Lucas Muntz (West Hartford, CT) closed out the contest with a 6-4 decision at 174.
After Wensley put the Engineers up 3-0 Brockport reeled off four wins to take the 13-3 lead in the nightcap. Jendritz then won his second bout of the day with a 5-3 win in SV-1. Muntz ended the day with an 18-3 tech fall at 3:15.
The neutral matches saw Brockport defeat Southern Maine 30-13 and Johnson & Wales hand head coach Lonnie Morris his 300th career win with a 30-2 result versus the Golden Eagles.
WPI (10-8) heads to Bridgewater State next Saturday for a quad match with Coast Guard and NYU. Johnson & Wales (19-1) and Brockport (5-1) are back at it on Sunday with JWU hosting the Wildcat Open at 9:30am and the Eagles headed to Jamestown Community College. Southern Maine (11-4) is back on the mat a week from Sunday (February 5th), for an 11am tri-meet at Western New England with Trinity.
