Shrewsbury Posts Three Wins as Wrestling Takes on Nationally-Ranked Squads at BSU Quad

Bridgewater, MA --- Heavyweight Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) was victorious three times for WPI as the Engineers went 1-2 Saturday in a quad meet that featured a pair of nationall-tanked teams hosted by Bridgewater State.  The Crimson and Gray blanked the host Bears 47-0 in its opening match before dropping a tight 18-15 decision to No. 16 Coast Guard and falling to No. 14 NYU in the finale 39-7.

WPI racked up bonus points early in the match with BSU, jumping out to a 24-0 lead after Michael Aquino (Boston, MA) was awarded a forfeit at 125 pounds and Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI), Andrew Ellis (Arlington, MA) and Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) followed with consecutive pins at 133, 141 and 149.   The Engineers then took the next three bouts by decision as Jack Nigro (Closter, NJ) defeated his opponent 8-2 at 157, Chase Lind (Fairfield, CT) posted a 5-2 victory over a regionally-ranked wrestler at 165 and Lucas Muntz (West Hartford, CT) tallied a 7-2 decision at 174.   Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) got the Engineers another fall at 184 pounds before Michael Curtis (Wells, ME) netted a 16-0 tech fall at 197 and Shrewsbury pitched a 5-0 shutout at 285 to close the action.

The Engineers won three of the first four bouts against Coast Guard to surge ahead 12-3.  Aquino collected a 8-3 decision at 125 pounds before Jendritz had his hand raised with a forfeit win at 133.  Following a Coast Guard decision at 141, Marsh won a 2-0 decision in a match of regionally-ranked wrestlers at 149.  The Bears then rattled off five straight wins by decision, including three by a single point to take a 18-12 lead into the final heavyweight bout where Shrewsbury won his second of three matches on the day by a 4-1 count.

In the final match of the day, NYU captured the first five bouts to jump out to a virtually insurmountable 22-0 lead.  Lind got WPI on the board with a first period pin at 165 and Shrewsbury closed out his strong showing with an 8-1 decision at 285.

WPI closes outs in 2016-2017 home campaign on Saturday, hosting Springfield at 5pm in Harrington Auditorium.
