Freshmen, O'Sullivan Fuel Offense, Cardin Keys Defense in Field Hockey's Seventh Win

Box Score

Leicester, MA --- Freshmen Anne Davis (Sandwich, MA) and Zoe Januszewski (Ventura, CA) each scored their first collegiate goals as visiting WPI clipped Becker, 6-1, in a non-conference field hockey matchup Friday night.

The first half saw WPI (7-0), off to their best start to the season since 1992, come down to the Becker end of the field again and again, repeatedly drawing fouls and penalty corners. Time and again, however, the Hawks (2-4) answered the Engineers' challenge, turning them back. With 6:48 to go in the period, WPI was ready to break the stalemate when they were awarded a penalty stroke off a Becker foul. But WPI junior midfielder Paris Lopez (Smithfield, RI) was turned away by Becker freshman goalkeeper Baileigh Griese (Woodstock, NY) to keep the game scoreless. Just 40 seconds later, the Engineers finally broke through as Davis recovered the ball in a scramble in front of the Hawks' net, scoring her first career goal in her first game played. WPI went into halftime leading 1-0.

The Engineers scored just 48 seconds into the second half, as junior forward Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, MA) deposited a put-back for her fifth goal of the season, putting the visitors up 2-0. Then with 24:11 to go in regulation, WPI was awarded another penalty stroke, and this one was put away over the right shoulder of the keeper by sophomore midfielder Emma Bennett (Hampstead, NH) as the Engineers went ahead 3-0.

The Hawks finally scored with 20:45 remaining as freshman midfielder Kylian Kelly (Shrewsbury, MA) shot the ball towards the goal from 30 yards out, and had her cross redirected into the goal by fellow rookie freshman forward Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, MAl) for her team-leading third goal of the season.

Now leading just 3-1, WPI quickly scored two more in rapid succession, both courtesy of sophomore forward Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA). The first came courtesy of a pass forward by sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) while the second came off a cross from junior forward Carly Cidado (Easton, MA). O'Sullivan upped her team-leading season goal total to ten on the year.  Januszewski then made it a 6-1 game with 2:53 to play.

O'Sullivan finished the night with a game-high nine shots while Becker junior midfielder Katherine Bernier (Dudley, MA) led the Hawks with two shots.

Griese finished the night with a career-high 15 saves, while WPI senior goalkeeper Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) played 63 minutes for the Engineers. Freshman Ali Gannon (Fremont, NH) spent the balance of the game in the cage for the Boynton Hillers and sophomore Jackie Cardin (Manchester, NH) registered a defensive save in the first half.

WPI outshot Becker on the night, 32-4 and held a 19-2 advantage in corners.

The Crimson and Gray are on the road again Tuesday for a 4pm appointment at Lasell while Becker heads to Dean for a 3pm contest.
