Field Hockey Moves to 2-0 in NEWMAC Play with 5-1 Triumph Over Mount Holyoke

Box Score

WORCESTER -- Sophomore Emily Sollecito (Bedford, MA) tallied her first two collegiate goals and senior Lauren Dishong (Lunenburg, MA) chipped in with a goal and assist to lift host WPI to a 5-1 victory in a NEWMAC field hockey contest played Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, WPI ups its record to 6-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play while the visiting Lyons slip to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in NEWMAC affairs.

The Engineers put pressure on from the start, attempting all six shots in the first quarter and were rewarded late in the stanza when sophomore Abigail Rauch (Jackson, NJ) poked home a quick pass from Dishong at 12:08 for her fourth goal of the season.

Sollecito netted the first of her two markers 4:54 into the second period when she lifted in a feed from the stick of sophomore Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA).  The hosts took a 3-0 lead into the locker room at intermission after rookie Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) collected her team-leading 10th goal at 25:08.

Dishong got into the goal scoring act at 33:02 when her shot from the middle when into the goal for her fifth marker of 2021.  Sollecito pushed the WPI advantage to 5-0 when she knocked home a rebound from near the left post at 42:30.  Senior Margaret Robb (Summit, NJ) dented the scoring column for Mount Holyoke midway through the fourth quarter when her shot from just inside the circle redirected off a WPI foot and into the net for her team-best fourth goal of the season.

The Crimson and Gray split their goalkeeping duties into halves.  Junior Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, MA) made one stop before the break for WPI while classmate MC Shea (Ewing, NG) made four saves over the final 30 minutes.  First-year Rachel Katzenberg (Reistertown, MD) was credited with 17 stops for the Lyons.

For the game, the Engineers enjoyed a 27-6 edge in shots and a 18-4 advantage in penalty corners.

WPI steps out of conference on Tuesday with a 6pm game at Salve Regina.  Mount Holyoke is off until next Saturday when it plays hosts to Clark in a noon NEWMAC match-up.
