Middletown, CT --- WPI men's swimming and diving ventured to Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon for a quad meet including Williams, Tufts, and the host Cardinals. The Engineers posted six top 10 finishes during the meet but ultimately fell to #11 Williams and #15 Tufts by scores of 265-52 and 266-51 respectively as well dropping 207-102 decision to Wesleyan
Senior Kyle Staubi (Red Hook, NY) contributed top 10 finishes in all three of his individual events to lead the way for the Engineers. He started the day off by finishing 6th in the 50 butterfly in a time of 22.86, later also placing sixth in the 100 backstroke with a 53.07. Staubi wrapped-up his meet by hitting the wall ninth in the 200 backstroke with a final time of 1:58.04.
Freshman Nikita Zuev (Wallingford, CT) was the top Engineer in the 200 butterfly, coming in with a time of 1:58.89 for 10th place. He was followed closely behind by Junior Matthew Segui (Stanton, CA) (2:03.30) and senior Christopher Thomas (Naperville, IL) (2:03.34). Zuev also led the 100 butterfly with a ninth place finish, hitting the wall in a time of 54.36.
In the longest event of the day, the 500 freestyle, WPI had a plethora of swimmers, including freshman Sam Witscher (Portland, OR), who placed 15th with a 4:56.32 to lead the team. The 400 IM saw a similar sized group of swimmers, with freshman Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) posting the fastest time swimming as an exhibition swimmer: 4:15.00.
The Engineers closed out the day with an eighth place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, with the team of Staubi, sophomore Matt Crane (Groton, MA), Smith, and Zuev combining for a time of 1:27.72.
On the boards, junior Alex Masiero (Richmond, MA) and sophomore Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) placed 10th and 11th in the 1-meter diving event, respectively, scoring 150.80 and 137.30 points.
The Engineers will now take a long break before their next competition on January 19, 2023 when they will host Wheaton at the Sports and Rec Center Pool.
