Background Information:
The Gompei Invitational began as a two-day meet in 2013 and expanded to three days in 2013 with separate men's and women's champions until 2016 when the event used combined team scoring. The meet began in the second year of the Sports & Recreation Center and served as a multi-day meet for the end of the fall and is named after the campus mascot Gompei the Goat. While WPI's nickname is the Engineers, its identity and mascot is a goat, and is only one of two NCAA schools with such a mascot, joining Bill the Goat from the United States Naval Academy.
A member of the Class of 1893 and a brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Gompei Kuwada was the first goat keeper. He was given this job by his class in 1891. The story goes that he was chosen because of his initials, G.K., which could also be imagined to stand for "Goat Keeper." He Kuwada, who was originally from Japan, was on the varsity chess, soccer, volleyball, football, and tennis teams. He also had a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Over a century later, the beloved mascot still has a widespread presence on campus, including two bronze sculptures: the "Proud Goat" overlooking the WPI Quadrangle, often seen wearing a WPI sweater in the winter, and the "Charging Goat" greeting rival athletic teams outside the Sports and Recreation Center. Proving he is the G.O.A.T, Gompei has evolved with the times and can be followed on his Twitter handle @gompei
