WORCESTER -- The WPI men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for a second place effort at the Gompei Invitational over the course of the weekend finishing with 5,034 points.
The women's team came away with a pair of podium appearances to close out the meet as Elinor Ross (Brandon, VT) finished third in the 50 Breast with a time of 30.37 while the 400 Free Relay squad of Andrea Wu (Redmond, WA), Ross, Lada DiMascolo (Puyallup, WA) and Morgan Foltz (North Easton, MA) combined for a third place time of 3:34.50 to close out the meet.
The day began with the 200 Back that saw Leah Kolb (Canton, MI) finish fifth with a time of 2:10.24, shaving 1.15 seconds off of her prelim time. On the men's side Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) started things off with a sixth place finish in 1:55.55, cutting 1.67 seconds off of his prelim time while Austin Aguirre (Santa Maria, CA) took 10th with a time of 1:59.65, going under 2 minutes for the first time this season.
Kyle Staubi (Red Hook, NY) and Nikita Zuev (Wallingford, CT) went 8-9 in the 200 Fly with times of 1:56.15 and 1:59.23 respectively while Wu took seventh in the 100 Free with a time of 53.10. Aidan Greenfield (East Northport, NY) added an eighth place performance in the 100 Free on the men's side finishing with a time of 48.84. From the B Finals, John Puksta (Nashua, NH) finished 13th, but with a time of 48.18.
The men's squad took sixth, eighth, 10th and 12th in the 50 Breast with Jake Thomas (Wenham, MA) earning sixth in 27.72, Ashton Lyon (Loveland, CO) in eighth in 28.13, Bora Hurst (West Palm Beach, FL) in 10th in 28.62 and Jack Duryea (Sag Harbor, NY) in 12th with a 28.33 time.
Bryant University took first place with an outstanding 8,037 points while Rowan came in third with 4,111 points.
The Engineers will look to bring this momentum into their final meet of 2022 when they take on Wesleyan, Tufts and Williams in a Quad Meet on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2pm.
