WORCESTER -- The WPI men's swimming and diving teams took first in 11 events en route as the Engineers knocked off Clark on Tuesday night.
The 200 Medley Relay teams took 1-2-3 in the opening events of the evening as Kyle Staubi (Red Hook, NY), Bora Hurst (West Palm Beach, FL), Matt Crane (Groton, MA) and Jack Brazer (Peterborough, NH) paced the squads with a 1:39.91 finish.
In the 1,000 Free, the first individual event of the night, Fraser Milligan (MIddlebury, VT) and Angus Zuwallack (East Falmouth, MA) went 1-2 with times of 10:38.03 and 10.41.21 in the event. Zuwallack erased 10 seconds off of his previous season best time.
Nikita Zuev (Wallingford, CT) led the way in the 200 Free which saw WPI take the top nine slots in the event. Zuev finished with a time of 1:48.84 while Griffin Bowers (Ambler, PA) took second in 1:50.63 and Aidan Greenfield (East Northport, NY) finished in third with a time of 1:50.86.
The 100 Back went in favor of Staubi who finished with a time of 54.01 while Austin Aguirre (Santa Maria, CA) took second 55.45 and Aaron Swann (Venice, FL) placed third in 55.87, in another race that saw the top six spots captured by Engineers.
Owen Krause (Potomac Falls, VA) earned the win in the 100 Breast in 1:01.00 while Eli Budde (Sykesville, MD) knocked 0.62 seconds off of his season best with a time of 1:02.93 and Hurst wrapped up the top-3 with a time of 1:04.52. Devin Mihaichuk (New Lenox, IL) earned second in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:04.19.
Crane earned the win in the 50 Free with a time of 22.43 while Staubi netted a 22.65 finish and Jack Duryea (Sag Harbor, NY) took third in 22.80. Once again the Engineers took the top eight spots in the event.
Alex Masiero (Richmond, VA) and Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) finished 1-2 in the 1-Meter Dive as Masiero finished with a score of 236.17 and Corrente 206.02. The duo flip flopped in the 3-Meter Dive with Corrente netting a season high score of 211.57 while Masiero took second with a score of 179.70.
The 100 Free went in favor of Bowers in a time of 50.04, while Alec Wong (Newton, MA) took second in 50.82, erasing 0.83 seconds off of his best time, and Evan Buckley (Burnt Hills, NY) took third in 51.39, as WPI captured the top six spots.
The 200 Back victory was earned by Zuwallack in 2:09.97 while Jake Thomas (Wenham, MA) took second in 2:11.18 while Aguirre captured the 200 Breast victory in 2:14.16 and Thomas touched the wall in 2:27.91 concluding the final scored races of the night for the Engineers.
In the 100 Fly, Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) would have earned the win with a time of 51.48 with Mihaichuk in second in 55.95. Smith would have earned another victory in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.41 and Staubi in second in 1:59.66.
The 200 Free Relay squad of Brazer, Duryea, Milligan and Segui touched the wall in an exhibition race with a time of 1:31.12.
WPI will look to keep the momentum going when they are back in action in the Menck Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2pm at the Sports and Recreation Center. Clark returns to the pool against Brandeis also Saturday at 2pm.
