Springfield, MA --- Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) and Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT) each logged third place finishes as WPI turned in a fifth place showing at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament hosted by Western New England on Sunday.
Pavis used a third period pin and a 9-2 decision to reach the semifinals at 125 pounds and collected a 6-2 triumph to claim bronze. Edmondson took a similar path to the podium at 184, posting 12-6 and 7-5 victories to advance to the semifinals and then received a medical forfeit in the third-place bout. Jonah Potter (Wells, ME) also enjoyed success at 184, registering a fall in the first round and a 14-8 decision in the consolation round.
A pair of weight classes each racked up four wins on Sunday. Ethan Wilson (Braintree, MA) recorded an opening round fall at 149 pounds and added a pin in the consolations at 149 pounds while Isaac Krieger (Newton, MA) tallied bonus point triumphs with a pin and a major decision in the same weight class. Meanwhile up at 165 pounds, Ryan Addeche (Foxboro, MA) grinded out three straight victories by decision and Alex Tomellini (Rehoboth, MA) notched a fall to reach the quarterfinals.
Ryan Hsu (Norwood, MA) posted multiple victories at 174 pounds, including a 8-0 major decision and a pin, while Antonios Sevastos (Mansfield, MA) advanced to the
141-pound quarterfinals, Theo Sawyers (Boston, MA) tallied a fall at 157 and Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ) collected a 6-3 decision at 197.
WPI turns its attention to the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championship. The two-day event hosted by Southern Maine begins Saturday at 11am and continues Sunday at 10am.
