Greensboro, NC --- WPI's Kyle Staubi (Red Hook, NY) made his NCAA Championship debut Thursday a memorable one as the senior earned All-America accolades in the 100-yard butterfly on day two of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center hosted by Old Dominion Athletic Conference in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Staubi began his championship meet in heat 3 of the preliminaries with a school record time of 48.23, bettering the old mark of 48.53 set by Clayton Besch in 2019. The time was second best in his heat and 16th overall, earning Staubi a spot in the evening's consolation final.
In the evening, the senior touched the wall in a time of 48.23 and moved up one position to take 15th place in the 42-person event. Chicago's Garrett Clasen captured the consolation final with a time of 47.48 while in the championship final, Kenyon's Marko Krtinic upset defending champion and top-seed Jesse Ssengonzi of Chicago with a meet-record time of 46.51, just 0.05 seconds off the all-time Division III best time.
Staubi's 15th place showing gives the Engineers two team points, tying WPI for 34th overall as a team. The senior will be back in the pool on Friday morning, swimming in the preliminaries of the 200-yard butterfly. Staubi will be in heat 2, lane 6
