Hot Hitting George and Lattimer Send Baseball Past Suffolk 13-10

Box Score

Northboro, MA --- The WPI baseball team won a high-scoring affair 13-10 against Suffolk on Monday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The Engineers have now won four in a row to move to 9-5 on the season, while the Rams even their mark to 4-4.

Gavin George (Salem, NH) and Jonathan Lattimer (Windsor, CT) led the WPI offense, which racked up a season-high 17 hits. George finished the game 4-for-5 with four RBI, including his first career homerun. Lattimer was 3-for-5 at the plate, driving in three runs. Jeffrey Brennan (Amsterdam, NY) also had a great day with three hits and a pair of RBI, while Kyle DeRoma (Dracut, MA) also drove in two runs on two hits. Henry Sniezek (Adams, MA) got the win in relief, throwing one inning, allowing three runs on three hits.

For Suffolk, lead-off hitter Jonny Gilbride (Beverly, MA) accounted for eight of the Rams' runs, driving in six and scoring two, while going 3-for-4 at the plate. Garret Roberts (Stratham, NH) also drove in a run on a solo homerun.

WPI notched two runs in the bottom of the second off a single from Lattimer to start the barrage of scoring. Two innings later, he added another RBI on a single up the middle to make it 3-0.

Suffolk got on the board in the top of the fifth with RBI singles from Max Iorio (Hull, MA) and Harry Painter (Essex, MA) to make it 3-2. In the bottom half, WPI added an RBI single from Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ) and a George double to make it 5-2.

The teams scored three runs each in the sixth inning, making it 8-5 WPI. Suffolk briefly tied the game in the top half with a three-run homerun from Gilbride, while in the bottom half, the Engineers regained the advantage, scoring one on a double from Kyle Johns (Milltown, NJ) and two on a George single.

Suffolk cut the lead to 8-6 with a Michael Cole (Plainview, NY) single and a Gilbride sac fly, but again WPI answered, pushing the lead to 11-7 with three in the bottom of the frame. Brennan's ground-rule double started the rally, while DeRoma drove home two on a double to right center.

A solo homerun from Suffolk's Roberts made it 11-8 in the top of the eighth, but WPI added two more in the bottom of the inning to push the advantage to 12-8. George's solo shot was the first WPI run of the frame, while Brennan tripled to drive home Liam Keblin (Newton, MA).

Trailing by five, Suffolk rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth off a Gilbride single and had the bases loaded with one out. However, Noah Pins (Holden, MA) got back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

WPI next plays tomorrow at Amherst at 3:30pm, while Suffolk plays its home opener on Thursday against UMass-Boston at 3:30pm.
