Norton, MA --- The WPI women's track and field team wrapped up a busy weekend with a runner-up finish at the Wheaton Invitational, as well as several strong performances, including a school record from graduate student
Grace Hadley (North Reading, MA) at BU's John Thomas Terrier Classic.
Hadley lowered her own school record in the 5,000m by five seconds, recording a top-25 finish at the Division-I heavy BU meet. She went 16:39.36, which is the 22nd-best time in NCAA Division III history, and is currently third on this season's list.
In the mile at BU, Five Engineers hit season-best marks, and either lowered or hit New England Division III Championship standards. Graduate student
Amelia Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) finished in 5:06.24, followed by graduate student
Elise Deshusses (Chapel Hill, NC) in 5:08.81, senior
Caitlin Guilfoyle (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) in 5:08.94 and graduate student
Charlotte Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) in 5:15.91.
Also at BU, senior
Vivienne Evans (Newtown Square, PA) notched a postseason qualifying time of 25.90 in the 200m dash, while senior
Jazmyn Ewing (Worcester, MA) recorded a season-best time of 26.63. Graduate student
Rachel Hurley (Peterborough, NH) notched a time of 10:18.96 in the 3,000m event.
Closing out the BU meet, senior
Sarah Ossing (Catonsville, MD) notched a personal best in the 5,000m. She clocked in at 18:48.76.
At Wheaton, the Engineers recorded 18 top-five finishes, compiling 97 total team points to rank second overall. The host Lyons took the team title with 155 points, while Bryant (94), Smith (55), and UMass Dartmouth (28) completed the top five.
Freshman
Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY), senior
Morgan Collins (Hudson, MA), and the 4x400m relay team of junior
Lauren Mitcheson (West Bridgewater, MA), sophomore
Bailey Allmon (Woodbine, MD), Steckley, and senior
Abby Hodges (North Easton, MA) all recorded wins at the meet.
Steckley made it two-for-two in her short career, winning her second 800m race of the season. She recorded a season-best 2:27.31 to take the victory.
Collins took top honors in the weight throw, recording a personal best toss of 14.95m, which qualifies her for the Division III New England meet. Senior
Elizabeth Matticoli (South Brunswick, NJ) also hit a postseason qualifying mark, throwing 13.56m.
In the relay, Mitcheson, Allmon, Steckley, and Hodges raced to victory in a time of 4:24.09, over five seconds better than second-place Wheaton.
Junior
Elie Bowman (Oakdale, CT) also secured postseason qualification, taking third overall in the mile, going 5:20.78.
Three Engineers placed in the top five in the triple jump, led by a runner-up finish from junior
Olivia Spielberger (Hingham, MA) who went 10.32m. Junior
Cassie Zimmerman (East Hampton, CT) took third in 10.19m, while freshman
Brianna Landry (Cumberland, RI) was fifth with a 9.77m.
Senior
Elizabeth Matticoli (South Brunswick, NJ) rounded out the postseason qualifiers, taking fourth in the shot put. She posted a distance of 11.22m, while Collins was fifth in the event with a 10.61m.
Closing out the individual highlights on the track, sophomore
Corryn Fisher (Swansea, MA) was second in the 60m hurdles in 9.74, while senior
Leithsa Dimanche (Billerica, MA) was fourth (27.69) in the 200m and fifth (1:05.06) in the 400m event.
On the field side, in the high jump, senior
Amanda Borden (Sherborn, MA) tied for second, going 1.46m, while junior
Cassie Zimmerman (East Hampton, CT) was fifth with a 1.41m.
In the long jump sophomore
Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) took third with a distance of 4.69m and freshman
Brianna Landry (Cumberland, RI) was fifth in 4.56m.
Wrapping up the field highlights, freshman
Charly Painter (Littleton, MA) took fourth in the pole vault, clearing 2.65m, while sophomore
Emilia Nadolski (Chicopee, MA) was fifth, also clearing 2.65m.
WPI continues the season on Friday and Saturday at the Tufts Cupid Challenge & Multi Meet.
