North Dartmouth, MA --- Backed by eight event wins, the WPI women's track and field team took home the team title at the 2024 Corsair Classic hosted by UMass Dartmouth. The event marked the first full-team action for the outdoor season.
WPI racked up 203 points, outpacing the field of 12 scoring teams. NEWMAC-rival Springfield took second with 120 points, while Westfield State was third with 93 points.
Senior
Vivienne Evans (Newtown Square, PA) took home two individual titles, while seniors
Morgan Collins (Hudson, MA),
Elizabeth Matticoli (South Brunswick, NJ),
Sarah Ossing (Catonsville, MD),
Caitlin Guilfoyle (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY), sophomore
Bailey Allmon (Woodbine, MD), and graduate student
Charlotte Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) all recorded wins at the event.
Evans got the sprint double, taking the 100m and 200m dash titles. In the 100 she went 12.57 to grab the win, while senior
Jazmyn Ewing (Worcester, MA) was fifth in 12.99. In the 200, Evans led a squad of four scorers, winning it in 26.54, while Ewing was second in 27.23. Seniors
Isabel Hallal (Foxboro, MA) and
Leithsa Dimanche (Billerica, MA) were seventh and eighth in the 200, taking seventh (27.98) and eighth (28.23) respectively.
Collins and Matticoli each recorded numerous scoring placements. Collins won the discus with a toss of 36.06m whereas Matticoli was fifth with a 32.36m effort. In the javelin, it was Matticoli in first with a 38.51m throw, flanked by a second-place finish from sophomore
Katy Gorden (Wayne, NJ) with a 36.14m. In the hammer, Collins was second (42.21m) and Matticoli third (39.29m), while Collins added a fourth-place finish in the shot put (10.49m).
WPI went 1-2 in the 1,500m event, with Guilfoyle taking the title in 4:50.17. Graduate student
Elise Deshusses (Chapel Hill, NC) was the runner-up, going 4:59.48.
Allmon led a trio of WPI sophomore scorers in the 400m hurdles. She took the event title in 1:10.62, narrowly eclipsing classmate
Bethany Brown (Allentown, PA) who ran a 1:10.87.
Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) was eighth in 1:16.94 to wrap up the event.
Four more Engineers tallied points in the 800m, led by a victory from graduate student
Charlotte Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) who ran a 2:27.26. Freshman
Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) was second in 2:32.02, while senior
Abby Hodges (North Easton, MA) took fifth in 2:38.10, and senior
Deidra Anderson (Billerica, MA) took eighth in 2:40.08.
Rounding out the event winners for WPI, senior
Sarah Ossing (Catonsville, MD) grabbed the 10,000m title with a time of 39:13.91. Sophomore
Sophia Reynolds (Andover, NH) took second in the event at 39:38.15.
In the jumps, senior
Amanda Borden (Sherborn, MA) took second in the high jump, going 1.57m. Sophomore
Lydia Beers (Norfolk, CT) and freshman
Brianna Landry (Cumberland, RI) scored in the long jump, with Beers taking sixth with a 4.69m and Landry seventh with a 4.60m effort.
Four Engineers graced the podium in the pole vault, led by freshman
Drew Perry (North Andover, MA) who took fourth overall, clearing 2.80m. Sophomore
Emilia Nadolski (Chicopee, MA) was sixth (2.65m), freshman
Charly Painter (Littleton, MA) was seventh (2.50m), and senior
Amanda Borden (Sherborn, MA) was eighth (2.50m).
Rounding out the meet, sophomore
Corryn Fisher (Swansea, MA) was second in the 110m hurdles (16.25) and sophomore
Lydia Beers (Norfolk, CT) was fifth (16.93), while sophomore
Beth Irwin (Guilderland, NY) was sixth in the steeplechase in 13:09.37.
WPI is back in action at the Springfield College Classic on Saturday, April 6 with the action beginning at 11am.
