Track & Field’s Hadley and Chabot Claim Regional Awards; Program Collects 18 USTFCCCA All-Region Honors

U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Awards - WPI Track & Field
New Orleans, LA --- WPI track and field compiled 18 All-Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Grace Hadley (North Reading, MA) and Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Brian Chabot gathered regional awards announced by the USTFCCCA this week.

Hadley, the 2023 USTFCCCA NCAA DIII East Region Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, doubled up with a 2024 USTFCCCA NCAA DIII East Region Women's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year honor. This indoor season, Hadley has broken a variety of program records and claimed five individual event titles, a pair of New England Division III crowns in the 3,000m and the mile that now stands as a championship record. Just last weekend, Hadley anchored the women's DMR that secured a spot in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Chabot was named the USTFCCCA East Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year for the first time for the indoor season and second overall with the most recent occasion coming in spring of 2023. The regional award now marks his eighth total East Region accolade from the USTFCCCA across both genders and seasons. In his second year as Director of Track & Field/Cross Country with the Crimson and Gray, coached the WPI distance runners to top spot in the East Region rankings in five events, including the national No. 1 miler and No. 2-ranked distance medley relay team. The Engineers compiled four school records and an event record at the New England Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Hadley and Chabot's region awards were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.

The top-five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region praise, in addition to each member of the region's top-three relay squads.

The men racked up six all-region accolades as graduate student David Reynolds (Andover, NH) claimed a pair himself in the 3,000m and 5,000m events. Reynolds posted an 8:18.76 time in the 3,000-meter for a school record and was the highest NCAA Division III runner at the All-New England Championships that included competition across all NCAA divisions. The graduate student trekker finished second overall at the New England Division III meet with a 14:28.94 for the fourth-fastest time in the east.

Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR) returns to the regional list in 2024 in the pole vault and recently cleared 4.89 meters at the NEDIII Championship for third place and breaking a school record. The performance earned the sophomore pole vaulter his first trip to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet this weekend. Fellow pole vaulter William Pagliarulo (Bedford, NH) etched himself on the regional list for the first time in his career in the heptathlon with a 4,368-point outing at the Tufts Cupid Challenge in early February that ranked him fourth in the region.

Sophomore jumper Dylan Serreyn (Windom, MN) earned his first-career regional distinction after jumping 14.01 meters in the triple jump at the NED3 Championships that took third overall as the leap finished third in the region.

On the track for the men was senior sprinter Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT) who posted a 22.05 time in the 200m dash that was good for eighth overall at the NED3 Championships and fifth in the region for the indoor stint.

On the women's side in the circle, senior Morgan Collins (Hudson, MA) finished third overall in the east in the weight throw after taking third at the New England D3 meet with a 16.13m toss on her last attempt that broke a 13-year program record.

On the track for the women, senior sprinter Vivienne Evans (Newtown Square, PA) claimed regional distinction in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dash. Evans gathered a pair of All-New England honors at the NEICAAA Championships after clocking a 7.80 for a personal-best to earn a spot in the finals where she finished sixth overall before setting a season-best 25.45 and earned a trip to the finals where she took seventh. The senior sprinter closed her indoor campaign ranking fifth in both events in the region.

Graduate student Rachel Hurley (Peterborough, NH) set a personal-best 17.44.66 in the 5,000m for the event title at the Tufts Cupid Invitational earning her the all-east recognition finishing at fifth overall in the region.

The women's distance medley relay squad checked in as the second-fastest group this indoor season after the quartet of Amelia Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY), Isabel Hallal (Foxboro, MA), Elise Deshusses (Chapel Hill, NC) and Hadley combined forces to break a program record this past weekend at the Tufts National Qualifier Meet with a 11:40.21 time. This year's group regional honor marks the second-straight indoor season the DMR has gathered efforts for All-Region laurels as Kokernak and Hadley are the two returning performers from 2023.

The 2024 USTFCCCA NCAA DIII East Region Women's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year earned All-Region praise in four individual events including the 800m, mile, 3,000m and 5,000m. Hadley currently holds the top time in all of NCAA DIII in the mile (4:45.94), the fourth in the 5,000m (16:39.36) and sits seventh in both the 800m (2:10.73) and 3,000m (9:35.07).

Fleck will represent the men's program in conjunction with the women's DMR and Hadley at the 2024 NCAA DIII Indoor Track & Field Championships this Friday-Saturday, March 8-9, at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
