Box Score Beverly, MA ---
Samantha Robison's (Wrentham, MA) second period goal led the WPI field hockey team to a 1-0 victory on the road at Endicott on Saturday afternoon. The win is the first of the season for the Engineers, who move to 1-2, while the Gulls now stand at 1-2.
Just under three minutes into the second half, WPI's
Ella Reeners (Huntington, MA) put one on cage, but a defensive save from Endicott's
Maddy Young (Hingham, MA) momentarily kept WPI off the board. Just four seconds later, Robison collected the ball and sent a shot into the back of the cage to make it 1-0 Engineers.
The goal was the first of the season for Robison and the fourth of her career, including her second game-winner. WPI goalie
Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) got the win, making two saves in her 11th-career victory, and her sixth career shut-out.
A quiet first quarter saw just one shot from each squad. In the second, it was all WPI, as the Engineers out-shot the Gulls, 4-0, including Robison's score.
Endicott had a chance early in the third frame, but a
Maddy Dengler (Winchester, MA) shot was blocked and a penalty corner came up empty. WPI followed with three corners, but only managed one shot during the stretch, as the game went to the fourth with WPI still leading, 1-0.
A frantic fourth quarter saw Endicott draw five corners and take four shots and WPI tally two corners and a shot. The Engineers also drew a penalty stoke, but the attempt was saved by the home keeper,
Alexis DeMattia (Methuen, MA). The Gulls' best chance to tally the equalizer came with just over a minute to play when Moreau saved a shot from Dengler to preserve the WPI victory.
WPI continues its non-conference slate, playing at Amherst on Wednesday at 6:30pm. Endicott has another NEWMAC opponent up next, hosting MIT on Tuesday at 7pm.
