Joseph Bernard (Stratham, NH) and
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) each registered a fifth-place performance and
Jerry Hill (Bethel, CT) and
Theo Sawyers (Boston, MA) both amassed four victories apiece as the WPI wrestling program made its 2025-2026 debut at the Racich Rumble hosted by Ursinus on Saturday.
The Engineers complied 59 points en route to a 10th place showing. NYU claimed the title at the 13-team event by registering 159.50 events.
Bernard posted 6-2 and 2-1 wins by decision to reach the quarterfinals at 197 pounds and then registered 8-0 and 11-3 major decisions to reach the fifth place match which was not contested due to match restrictions. Tully went a round further in the winner's bracket, collecting a pair of pins, including one in 27 seconds, to reach the semifinals at 184 but fell in the semis and did not wrestle the rest of the day. Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ) capped a strong day for the Crimson and Gray in the upper weight classes as the heavyweight shook off an early loss to rattle off three wins in a row, including a pair of falls and a win TB2.
Hill captured his opening bout at 141 pounds with a 9-2 triumph and then later rattled off three straight wins, beginning by turning the tables on a 8-3 deficit by pinning his opponent at 3:43. Also at 141,
Resse Titus (Canton, CT) tallied a pair of wins by decision to kick off his season and
Mason Medina (Orlando, FL) added a 14-5 major decision. Swayers bounced back from a defeat in his first match to post four straight victories at 174 pounds, including a pair by fall and the Engineers also got a 16-6 major decision in the weight class by
Gavin Luciano (Norton, MA).
Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) reached the quarterfinals at 133 pounds by producing pins in his first two matches of the season.
Lucas Marchese (Branchburg, NJ) alternated wins and losses in his four bouts at 157 while
Bud West (Concord, MA) collected a pin in the weight class as well. Others to notch victories on the day for the Crimson and Gray included
Ezekiel Kasen (Chestnut Hill, MA) with a fall at 125,
Mason Basara (Bethlehem, PA) with a first period tech fall (17-2 - 2:03) and
Joey Baisley (Charlotte, NC) with a 4-2 decision in the winner's bracket at 165.
WPI is back in action next Saturday with its home opener. The Engineers will entertain Rhode Island College and Plymouth State in a 4:30pm tri-match in the Sports & Recreation Center.
