Oneonta, NY --- Lightweights
Joel Puri (Milford, MA) and
Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) delivered WPI wrestling the first two bout victories in its final dual meet of the first semester portion of the 2025-26 wrestling season but it was not enough as host Oneonta captured six of the next seven matches to snatch a 31-16 triumph over the Engineers inside the Field House on Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson and Gray are now 4-2 in the dual meet portion of their season while it was the Red Dragons (1-0) first dual meet of this winter campaign.
Puri got WPI off to a 6-0 start as the 125-pounder registered a pin of his opponent with just 31 seconds remaining in the match's opening bout. Pavis then hit the mat racked up the points at an impressive clip at 133, producing an 18-4 major decision.
Oneonta then rattled off three straight tech falls to surge ahead 15-10 midway through the contest.
Joey Baisley (Charlotte, NC) got the Engineers with a well-earned 7-5 victory at 165 bounds but consecutive bonus points wins (Fall at 174 and Major Decision at 184) that secured the win for the host Red Dragons.
Joseph Bernard (Stratham, NH), ranked fourth in this week's NCAA Division III Northeast rankings at 197, posted a 9-6 win by decision for the Boynton Hillers in the penultimate bout of the day.
WPI is off for B Term finals and the Christmas and New Year's holidays. The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, January 10th, venturing to Bridgewater State for a noon tri-match with Wesleyan and the hosting Bears.
