Bernard, Sawyers, Tully Bowen Lead Wrestling to Third Place Showing at Ted Reese Invitational

WORCESTER -- 197-pounder Joe Bernard (Stratham, NH) highlighted four WPI wrestlers who turned in top four performances Saturday at the 20th annual Ted Reese Invitational hosted by Southern Maine on Saturday.

As a team, the Engineers accumulated 106 points to finish third in the 10-team event.  Coast Guard captured the team title with 179 points while Castleton was second (155) and the host Huskies fourth (74).

Joining Bernard on the podium were Theo Sawyers (Boston, MA) and Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) who placed third at 174 and 184 pounds respectively and heavyweight Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ), who finished fourth.

Bernard, ranked eighth in the latest NEWA rankings, won his first three bouts to reach the final at 197 pounds.  The junior began his day with a 15-0 tech fall and a second period pin (4:58) before upsetting third-ranked Kevin Pandorf of Coast Guard 5-1 in the semifinals.  In the championship bout, Bernard fell 6-3 to second-ranked Josh Negron of Castleton.
 
Sawyers was busy Saturday, posting a 5-1 record.  The 174-pounder opened the day with a pin with 10 seconds remaining in the first period before dropping a narrow 5-4 decision to eventual champion of Mason Courley of Coast Guard.  The senior bounced back with four straight victories to take third bookended by a 12-2 major decision and a 21-6 tech fall.  John-Michael Economos (Staten Island, NY), Michael McNulty (Manasquan, NJ) and Alex Mckenzie (San Anselmo, CA) teamed up to provide the Crimson and Gray seven victories at 174.    Economos tallied three bonus point triumphs featuring a 12-0 major decision, a 17-2 tech fall and a pin.  McNulty amassed a pin at 43 seconds to reach the quarterfinals and a 4-2 decision later in the day while Mckenzie was 2-2 on the day including a pin in just 30 seconds in the round of 16.
 
Tully was a pin machine for the Engineers at 184 pounds.  The junior rattled off two straight falls to reach the semifinals and then two more in the consolation round, with both occurring in under a minute (0:35 and 0:26). Sean Keady (Natick, MA) added a pin in the weight class for WPI. 

Bowen registered a 4-2 mark at 285 pounds.  The senior grinded out a 5-4 victory in the round of 16 and then three consecutive victories in the Consis, including a first period pin and a 2-1 decision.  Rookie David Grimes (Northfield, OH) helped the Engineers claim three more victories at heavyweight, including a pair of falls and a 3-1 decision.
Several others performed well for the Crimson and Gray on Saturday.  Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) alternated wins and losses kicking off his event with a pin at 2:14 at 133 pounds and then added a fall later in the day with just 37 seconds remaining in the bout.   

The Engineers boasted a trio of multiple winners of 141 pounds Mason Medina (Orlando, FL) racked up three bonus point wins including a second period fall in his opening match and then later a pin at 26 seconds and a 11-2 major decision.   Jerry Hill (Bethel, CT) delivered a 10-4 triumph to start his day and came back with a pin late in the first period in the afternoon and sophomore Sam Rodrigues (Lincoln, RI) registered a pair of decisive tech falls for the Boynton Hillers.

Mason Basara (Bethlehem, PA) and David Parrish (McDonough, GA) teamed up to collect four victories for WPI at 149.  Basara began his tournament with a 21-6 tech fall and later on tacked on a late first period pin while Parrish posted a pair of high-scoring wins by decision.
 
The Crimson Gray saw plenty of action at 157 pounds.  Lucas Marchese (Branchburg, NJ) registered three wins on the day including a 12-1 major decision in the opening round and a second major decision later in the day.  Bud West (Concord, MA) recorded a pair of bonus points, featuring a round of 16 tech fall and a major decision while Sean Callanan (Wakefield, MA) registered a first period pin and a dramatic 11-7 win in SV and Luke Coelho (Belmont, MA) chipped in with second period fall.
 
Ryan Addeche (Foxboro, MA) and Zak Robinson (Holliston, MA) each began their journeys at 165 pounds with opening round victories as Addeche squeaked a 7-6 decision as part of his three wins Saturday while Robinson handed his foe a second period pin in his debut and a second fall in the Consis.  Logan Jacques (Hudson, NH) provided WPI team points with a pin in the consolation round.
