Boston, MA --- Seniors
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA) and
Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR) led the way for the 17th-ranked WPI men's indoor track and field team as the Engineers totaled eight top-15 performances at the BU Terrier Classic on Friday.
Gerlach delivered a historic performance in the high jump, clearing a personal-best 2.00 meters (6-6.75) to place second overall. The mark is at least a tie for the program's indoor school record. Meanwhile Fleck provided WPI's top finish of the meet, winning the pole vault with a clearance of 4.90 meters (16-0.75).
Junior
Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT) advanced to the finals of the shot put, finishing ninth with a mark of 14.54 meters (47-8.5), then closed the meet with a personal-best toss of 17.25 meters (56-7.25) in the weight throw to place sixth overall. His mark was an improvement of nearly half a meter and currently ranks him among the top 35 in Division III.
On the track, the Engineers posted several strong efforts across the sprints and middle distances. In the 400 meters, freshman
Brian Stampoulos (Hillsboro, NJ) highlighted the group with a personal-best time of 49.62. Sophomore
Will Larsen (Chelmsford, MA) also recorded a personal best, running 50.20, while senior
Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA) added a time of 50.43 and junior
Gabriel D'Amour (Somers, CT) finished in 51.15.
Senior
Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) paced WPI in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 1:52.31.
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) followed in 1:55.41, while senior
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) recorded a mark of 1:57.36.
In the 1000 meters, sophomore
Alden Betterley (Bow, NH) turned in one of the Engineers' biggest improvements of the day, shaving nearly two seconds off his personal best with a time of 2:32.91.
The Engineers saw action in the 200 meters, led by senior
Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA), who ran 21.90. Sophomore
Ethan Schnyer (Nashua, NH) followed in 22.18, with
Justin Serrecchia (Lakeville, MA) posting a time of 22.56 and graduate student
Josh Castro (Pittsburgh, PA) finishing in 22.90.
Sophomore
Jackson Sobelman (Redding, CT) recorded a personal-record performance in the 3000 meters, finishing in 8:40.96, while freshman
Aloiye Okhipo (Milford, MA) represented WPI in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.69, while
Wrapping up the highlights for the Engineers, the quartet of
Theo Burrell (East Haddam, CT),
Colin Squier (Douglas, MA),
Teddy Wagner (Winthrop, MA), and
Daniel Kim (Orange, CT) combined for a season-best time of 3:26.87 in the 4x400m relay.
WPI returns to action on Saturday, February 7, when the Engineers travel to Medford, MA, for the Tufts 6-Way Meet.
Results
