Springfield, MA --- The WPI men's indoor track and field team delivered a dominant performance Saturday at the Triangle Classic inside Springfield College's Field House, highlighted by four event victories and a host of top-10 finishes.
The Engineers notched three individual wins and one relay title at the event. Senior
Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA), freshman
Aloiye Okhipo (Worcester, MA), and senior
Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR) and the 4x800-meter relay team of junior
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT), freshman
Alden Betterley (Bow, NH), freshman
Colin Britner (Hampton, CT), and junior
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) all came home with victories on the day.
Cole led the way in the 60 meters, winning the final in 6.89 after qualifying first overall with a time of 6.96 in the preliminaries.
Okhipo secured the title in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 8.21 after posting an 8.33 in prelims. Sophomore
Will Fairfax (Dartmouth, MA) joined him in the final and finished fifth in 8.53. Both Okhipo and Fairfax recorded personal-best performances across the two rounds.
Fleck delivered the top mark in the pole vault, clearing 4.95 meters (16-2.75) to earn the victory.
The 4x800-meter relay quartet closed out its race in 7:59.00 to win the event and secure a place in the seeded heat at next week's New England Division III Championships.
WPI dominated the 400 meters with five top-eight finishes. Freshman
Brian Stampoulos (Hillsborough, NJ) led the way with a third-place finish in 50.79, followed by senior
Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA) in fourth at 51.33. Junior
Joshua Castro (Pittsburgh, PA) secured sixth in 52.25, sophomore
Will Larsen (Chelmsford, MA) finished seventh in 52.52, and freshman
Jurjen Bouvier (Longmeadow, MA) added an eighth-place effort in 52.56.
The mile featured three top-eight finishes as freshman
Jackson Sobelman (Redding, CT) earned runner-up honors in 4:24.08, freshman
Drew O'Reilly (Syracuse, NY) finished third in 4:26.33, and freshman
Matthew Meerdink (Ballston Spa, NY) placed eighth in 4:31.95.
Also in the middle distances, junior
Trip Williams (Pelham, NH) placed fifth in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:41.48, while freshman
Henry Jacobsen (Needham, MA) added a fifth-place showing in the 3000 meters, crossing in 9:21.46.
In the field events, senior
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA) recorded a pair of top-five finishes, placing second in the high jump at 1.92 meters (6-3.5) and fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.37 meters (43-10.5). Stampoulos added a fourth-place effort in the triple jump at 13.53 meters (44-4.75).
Rounding out the meet, sophomore
John Cummings (Dallas, PA) finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 13.60 meters (44-7.5) and junior
Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT) secured second in the weight throw with a mark of 16.56 meters (54-4).
WPI will next compete at the New England Division III Championships on Sunday, March 1, at The TRACK at New Balance in Boston.
