Springfield, MA --- The WPI women's indoor track and field team turned in a strong showing Saturday at the Triangle Classic, highlighted by a relay victory and 16 top-10 finishes inside Springfield College's Field House.
The Engineers captured the 4x800-meter relay title as the quartet of freshman
Catherine Daly (Groton, MA), senior
Bethany Brown (Allentown, PA), freshman
Sabrina Cady (Lowell, MA) and junior
Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) crossed the line first in 9:55.13.
On the track, Brown added an individual podium performance in the 400 meters, placing third in 1:00.98. Cady followed with a seventh-place finish in 1:02.50, Steckley was eighth in 1:02.90, and freshman
Samantha Alley (Shrewsbury, MA) rounded out the top 10 in 10th at 1:04.07.
Sophomore
Rayna Thompson (Brentwood, NH) led WPI in the 60-meter dash finals, placing fifth in 7.94, while sophomore
Julia Fronc (Plaistow, NH) secured eighth in 8.23.
In the 800 meters, sophomore
Caetlyn Embree (Sherborn, CT) finished seventh in 2:31.83, and senior
Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) claimed eighth in 2:35.15. Junior
Grace Connell (Far Hills, NJ) added a ninth-place effort in the mile, clocking 5:58.39.
In the field events, freshman
Ella Stone (Branford, CT) led the way with a third-place finish in the long jump. She recorded a personal best leap of 5.12 meters (16-9.75). In the triple jump, freshman
Shayna Hailey (Worcester, MA) secured fourth at 10.57 meters (34-8.25), and freshman
Addison Collins (Westborough, MA) followed in fifth at 10.53 meters (34-6.75).
Senior
Katy Gorden (Wayne, NJ) delivered a pair of top-10 finishes in the throws, placing ninth in the shot put with a toss of 10.27 meters (33-8.5) and 10th in the weight throw at 11.28 meters (37-0.25). Freshman
Joselyn Smith (Uxbridge, MA) earned sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 12.85 meters (42-2).
Up next, qualified WPI student-athletes will head to the New England Division III Championships on Sunday, March 1, at The TRACK at New Balance in Boston.
