Evans Takes 60 Meter Title as WPI Women Compete at Tufts

Medford, MA --- The WPI women's indoor track and field team competed on Friday at the Tufts 6-Way Meet, highlighted by a sprint victory from graduate student Vivienne Evans (Newtown Square, PA) and multiple top-five finishes across the meet.
 
Evans led the Engineers with a win in the 60 meters, crossing the line in 7.95 after qualifying third in the prelims. Sophomore Julia Fronc (Plaistow, NH) also finished ninth in the prelims. Evans later added a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters, clocking a time of 26.41 to round out a strong day on the track.
 
In the middle distances, seniors Bethany Brown (Allentown, PA) and Maeve Steckley (Rochester, NY) delivered WPI's top finishes, placing third and fourth, respectively, in the 600 meters. Brown posted a season-best 1:40.53, while Steckley followed closely with a season-best 1:41.13. Freshman Sabrina Cady (Lowell, MA) also cracked the top 10 in the event, finishing ninth in 1:43.66.
 
WPI turned in additional top-10 performances in the hurdles, led by sophomore Madisen McLeod (Ledyard, CT), who placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles, with freshman Addison Collins (Tyngsboro, MA) finishing sixth. Earlier in the day, McLeod, Collins, and freshman Samantha Alley (Randolph, NJ) all advanced out of the prelims, with Alley placing 10th. Alley later added a ninth-place finish in the 400 meters, while senior Bailey Allmon (Woodbine, MD) followed in 10th.
 
The Engineers also had multiple highlights in the field events, paced by freshman Shayna Hailey (Stoughton, MA), who recorded a third-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 10.61 meters (34-9.75). Collins followed in fourth, while freshman Ella Stone (Branford, CT) placed fifth. Stone added another top-10 effort in the long jump, finishing sixth with a mark of 5.04 meters (16-6.5), while Hailey placed eighth in the high jump at 1.38 meters (4-6.25). Senior Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) placed ninth in the high jump, and senior Lydia Beers (Norfolk, CT) finished 10th in the long jump.
 
In the throws, freshman Joselyn Smith (Strong, ME) turned in a pair of top-10 performances, placing seventh in the shot put and eighth in the weight throw. Senior Katy Gorden (Wayne, NJ) followed with a ninth-place finish in the shot put and 10th in the weight throw, while sophomore Sydney Shilts (Flemington, NJ) added a ninth-place finish in the weight throw.
 
WPI closed the meet with a strong relay showing, as the "A" 4x400-meter relay of Brown, Cady, Bailey Allmon (Woodbine, MD), and Alley placed fifth in a time of 4:19.19.
 
WPI is back in action at Tufts next weekend for the Tufts Cupid Challenge & Multi Day on Friday and Saturday.
