North Dartmouth, MA --- The WPI men's track and field team opened its outdoor season with a dominant performance at the Corsair Classic on Saturday capturing eight event victories and posting a deep list of top-10 finishes at UMass Dartmouth.
WPI's sprint group led the way, as senior
Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA) swept the short sprints, winning the 100-meter dash (10.80) and 200-meter dash (22.13). Junior
Sam Manteria (Wilbraham, MA) placed second in the 100 (10.89) and fourth in the 200 (22.57), while sophomore
Justin Serrecchia (Lakeville, MA) finished fifth in the 100 (11.27) and sixth in the 200 (23.06). Sophomore
Ethan Schnyer (Nashua, NH) added a runner-up finish in the 200 (22.21).
In the 400 meters, senior
Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA) claimed victory in 50.56. Junior
Gabriel D'Amour (Somers, CT) placed third (51.30), while sophomore
Will Kelley (Medford, MA) (6th, 52.33), graduate student
Joshua Castro (Pittsburgh, PA) (7th, 52.37), and junior
Koray Boybeyi (Reston, VA) (10th, 52.85) all finished inside the top 10.
The Engineers were strong in the hurdles, led by freshman
Aloiye Okhipo (Milford, MA), who won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.30. In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore
Will Larsen (Chelmsford, MA) took first (55.42), while sophomore
Jurjen Bouvier (Longmeadow, MA) (3rd, 57.14), freshman
Brian Stampoulos (Hillsboro, NJ) (5th, 57.31), and sophomore
Colin Squier (Douglas, MA) (7th, 1:00.43) added top-10 finishes.
WPI also shined in the distance events, with senior
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) winning the 1500 meters in 4:00.46. Senior
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) finished third (4:05.83), followed by sophomore
Alden Betterley (Bow, NH) (5th, 4:07.61), sophomore
Jackson Sobelman (Redding, CT) (6th, 4:08.53), and sophomore
Colin Britner (Hampton, CT) (10th, 4:13.88).
The relay team of Manteria, Schnyer, Serrecchia, and Cole added another victory in the 4x100-meter relay, clocking 41.61. WPI's "B" team of Okhipo, senior
Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR), senior
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA), and sophomore
Ajay Bellamy (Hamden, CT) placed third (43.74).
In the field events, Fleck cleared 4.95 meters (16-3) to win the pole vault, while Bellamy placed fourth (3.55m). In the high jump, Gerlach led WPI with a fifth-place finish (1.87m), and sophomore
Ethan Ramirez (Burlington, CT) tied for eighth (1.72m).
The throws group also added standout efforts. Junior
Matthew Richards (Peabody, MA) placed second in the javelin with a throw of 56.40 meters (185-0), earning a New England Division III Championship automatic qualifying mark. Freshman
Josh Thomas (Marlboro, MA) finished seventh (43.99m).
In the discus, sophomore
John Cummings (Dallas, PA) placed third with a mark of 43.22 meters (141-10), earning a New England Division III Championship automatic qualifying mark, while junior
Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT) took fourth (42.45m) with a strong provisional mark. Junior
Michael Zuo (Worcester, MA) added a 10th-place finish (39.14m).
Anderson also placed fifth in the shot put (14.15m), with Zuo finishing eighth (12.97m) and Cummings taking 10th (12.90m). In the hammer throw, freshman
Logan Lavimodiere (Cranston, RI) placed ninth (41.74m), followed by Zuo in 10th (40.69m).
WPI will next compete at the Springfield College Classic on Saturday, April 4.
