North Dartmouth, MA --- The WPI women's track and field team opened its outdoor season with a strong all-around performance at the Corsair Classic on Saturday, highlighted by five event victories and numerous top-10 finishes at UMass Dartmouth.
WPI was paced by standout efforts on the track, where graduate student
Vivienne Evans (Newtown Square, PA) swept the sprint events. Evans captured the 100-meter dash in 12.74 and followed with a win in the 200 meters in 26.29.
Sophomore
Rayna Thompson (Brentwood, NH) added another victory for the Engineers, winning the 400 meters in 58.96, while also helping WPI to a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay (51.44) alongside sophomore
Julia Fronc (Plaistow, NH), freshman
Ella Stone (Branford, CT), and Evans. Fronc added an individual fourth-place finish in the 400, going 1:03.03.
In the distance events, senior
Sophia Reynolds (Andover, NH) led a strong WPI showing in the 1500 meters, taking first place in 4:59.80. Sophomore
Catherine Daly (Groton, MA) followed in fourth (5:06.97), while freshman
Kayleigh Carnazza (Virginia Beach, VA) (5:11.21) and freshman
Sabrina Cady (Lowell, MA) (5:12.42) also placed inside the top 10. Senior
Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) added a ninth-place finish in the 800 meters (2:38.65).
The hurdlers saw multiple highlights, led by sophomore
Madisen McLeod (Ledyard, CT) with a third-place finish in the 100-meter distance (16.42). Freshman
Addison Collins (Tyngsboro, MA) placed fifth (16.51), followed by freshman
Samantha Alley (Randolph, NJ) in seventh (17.20) and sophomore
Caetlyn Embree (Sherborn, CT) in eighth (17.89). In the 400-meter hurdles, senior
Bailey Allmon (Woodbine, MD) finished second (1:09.23), while Alley added a third-place effort (1:09.85).
In the field events, Collins delivered one of the top performances of the day, winning the triple jump with a mark of 10.51 meters (34-5.75). Freshman
Shayna Hailey (Stoughton, MA) added a sixth-place finish in the event (9.81m) and cleared 1.42 meters (4-8.00) to tie for seventh in the high jump.
The long jump group featured a pair of top-four finishes, led by Stone in second (4.94m) and senior
Lydia Beers (Norfolk, CT) in fourth (4.79m).
In the throws, freshman
Reese Dyson (Schwenksville, PA) placed fourth in the discus (32.45m) in her first collegiate competition, while senior
Katy Gorden (Wayne, NJ) finished 10th in the same event (28.29m). Gorden also turned in a standout performance in the javelin, placing second with a personal-best throw of 39.03 meters (128-1).
Freshman
Addison Pong (Bolton, MA) made an immediate impact in her collegiate debut, placing seventh in the shot put with a mark of 10.25 meters (33-7.50). Sophomore
Sydney Shilts (Flemington, NJ) added a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw (32.70m).
Up next, WPI will travel to the Springfield College Classic on Saturday, April 4.
