Medfield, MA --- The WPI women's track and field team turned in a strong opening day performance at the Tufts Spring Stampede on Friday highlighted by victory from senior
Sophia Reynolds (Andover, NH) and multiple personal bests.
Reynolds paced the Engineers with a victory in the 10,000 meters, crossing in a personal-best 37:46.16.
On the track, sophomore
Catherine Daly (Groton, MA) paced WPI in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a sixth-place finish in 12:10.40, while senior
Beth Irwin (Guilderland, NY) followed in 11th (12:39.47).
In the field events, senior
Katy Gorden (Wayne, NJ) placed 10th in the javelin with a throw of 31.97 meters (104-10). In the triple jump, freshman
Shayna Hailey (Stoughton, MA) recorded a personal-best leap of 11.14 meters (36-6.75) to finish seventh, while freshman
Addison Collins (Tyngsboro, MA) placed 13th (10.56m).
The heptathlon group of sophomore
Caetlyn Embree (Sherborn, MA), sophomore
Emma Conway (Suffield, CT), and senior
Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) opened competition with strong performances across four events. All three posted personal-best times in the 100-meter hurdles, led by Embree in 16.99, followed by Conway (17.44) and Coutu (18.10).
In the high jump, Embree cleared 1.40 meters (4-7.00), while Conway reached 1.34 meters (4-4.75). The trio continued in the shot put, where Coutu led the Engineers with an eighth-place mark of 9.64 meters (31-7.50), followed by Conway (9.21m) and Embree (7.61m).
The day concluded with another round of personal bests in the 200 meters, as Embree (28.45), Conway (28.74), and Coutu (28.97) each capped their opening day with PR performances.
Day two of the Tufts Spring Stampede begins Saturday, with the heptathlon resuming at 9:30am and the full meet schedule continuing at 11:00am in Medford.
