Cole, Anderson, Ramirez Lead Men Track & Field to Runner-Up Finish at NEWMAC Championships

New London, CT --- A NEWMAC title and a school record from senior Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA) highlighted a strong showing as the WPI men's track and field team placed second at the NEWMAC Championships on Saturday.

The Crimson and Gray finished second overall with 202 points. MIT claimed the team title with 253 points, followed by Springfield (125). Babson (87), Coast Guard (78), and Wheaton (Mass.) (50) rounded out the standings.

Cole captured the NEWMAC title in the 100 meters for the second straight year, sprinting to a school-record time of 10.41. Junior Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT) added another title in the discus with a winning throw of 46.78 meters, while sophomore Ethan Ramirez (Burlington, CT) secured his second consecutive NEWMAC decathlon championship.
 
In two days of competition, WPI totaled a strong group of 13 All-NEWMAC performances, led on day two by Cole's victory in the 100 meters and runner-up finish in the 200 meters (21.60). Junior Sam Manteria (Wilbraham, MA) earned second-team honors in the 100 meters with a personal-best 10.53, while senior Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) placed second in the 800 meters (1:55.26).
 
Senior Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA) earned All-NEWMAC honors with a runner-up finish in the high jump (1.90m) and added a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.89 meters.

Sophomore Will Larsen (Chelmsford, MA) added a runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles (54.34), and the 4x100-meter relay team of Manteria, sophomore Justin Serrecchia (Lakeville, MA), junior Ajay Bellamy (Hamden, CT), and Cole earned second-team honors with a time of 41.80. Senior Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) placed second for an All-NEWMAC nod in the 5000 meters (14:56.86), while taking third in the 1500 meters (3:56.92).
 
Elsewhere on the track, sophomore Alden Betterley (Bow, NH) finished fifth in the 1500 (4:00.51), while freshman Matthew Meerdink (Ballston Spa, NY) placed ninth in the 5000 meters (15:39.56). Junior Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) earned a third-place finish in the 800 meters (1:55.56) and also placed third in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:25.16), with Meerdink (4th, 9:37.15) and sophomore Colin Britner (Hampton, CT) (5th, 9:46.49) also scoring in the event. Sophomore Drew O'Reilly (Syracuse, NY) added a sixth-place finish in the 5000 meters (15:05.66), recording a personal-best effort.
 
In the sprint and hurdle events, sophomore Brian Stampoulos (Hillsboro, NJ) placed sixth in the 400 meters (50.13). Sophomore Jurjen Bouvier (Longmeadow, MA) finished third in the 400-meter hurdles (54.41), while sophomore Theo Burrell (East Haddam, CT) added a sixth-place finish (55.80) and sophomore Colin Squier (Douglas, MA) placed ninth (56.79). Serrecchia contributed a ninth-place finish in the 200 meters (22.24).
 
In the throws, Anderson's win in the discus led a strong group effort, as sophomore John Cummings (Dallas, PA) placed fifth (41.34m), freshman Logan Lavimodiere (Cranston, RI) took sixth (41.13m), and junior Michael Zuo (Worcester, MA) finished seventh (39.15m).
 
The 4x400-meter relay team of Larsen, Skerry, Stampoulos, and senior Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA) placed fourth in 3:24.07.
 
Up next, WPI's qualified student-athletes will be in action at the two-day New England Division III Championships, hosted by Springfield, beginning Friday, May 1.
