Springfield, MA --- The WPI men's track and field team delivered a dominant performance at the New England Division III Championships, capturing the team title behind multiple individual champions and a deep collection of All-New England performances.
The Engineers totaled 115 points to claim the championship, more than doubling the output of Wesleyan and UMass Dartmouth, who tied for second with 56 points each.
Sophomore
Sam Manteria (Wilbraham, MA) led the way with a pair of New England titles, winning both the 100 meters and 200 meters to cement himself as the top sprinter at the meet. He also anchored the 4x100-meter relay team of
Justin Serrecchia (Lakeville, MA),
Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA), and
Alex Cole (Weymouth, MA) to a runner-up finish, earning All-New England honors. Also in the individual 100, Cole added a third-place finish (10.77) and Serrecchia was seventh (11.01) as both added regional honors as part of WPI's sprint success.
Freshman
Matthew Meerdink (Ballston Spa, NY) added a championship performance in the 3000-meter steeplechase, crossing in 9:25.46, while sophomore
Colin Britner (Hampton, CT) finished fifth in the same event (9:37.47) to also earn All-New England distinction.
In the 1500 meters, senior
Everett Mosher (Chester, VT) delivered a standout race, placing second in 3:58.26, missing the title by just 0.01 seconds. Mosher also contributed to the 4x800-meter relay alongside
Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA),
Alden Betterley (Bow, NH), and
Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT), which placed second overall (7:50.93). Individually, Skerry was second in the 800 meters (1:54.22), while Wyche added a fifth-place finish (1:54.73). Betterley competed in the event, posting a time of 1:56.61.
In the hurdles, freshman
Aloiye Okhipo (Milford, MA) earned a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles to secure All-New England honors. In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore
Will Larsen (Chelmsford, MA) set a school record with a time of 54.11 to place fifth, while sophomore
Jurjen Bouvier (Longmeadow, MA) finished seventh (54.58), both earning All-New England recognition.
In the throws, junior
Ethan Anderson (North Haven, CT) placed fifth in the shot put (15.04m) and also competed in the discus (40.09m). Sophomore
John Cummings (Dallas, PA) recorded a personal-best 44.79 meters to place fifth in the discus and added a mark of 13.66 meters in the shot put. Both add All-New England honors to their names.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Bouvier, Burrell,
Will Kelley (Medford, MA), and
Anthony Minichiello (Burlington, MA) closed the meet with an eighth-place finish in 3:24.02, earning yet another regional accolade for the Engineers.
Overall, WPI totaled 17 All-New England performances on the men's side, including two from Friday's competition.
Select members of the Engineers are slated to compete at the Farley Inter-Regional Extravaganza, set for May 8-9 at Williams.
