Volleyball Opens Elms Invitational Play with Pair of Shutouts

Chicopee, MA --- WPI volleyball didn't drop a set on Friday evening as they collected a pair of victories at the Elms College Invitational, opening their weekend with 3-0 wins over Colby-Sawyer and SUNY Cobleskill.

The Engineers (3-0) have not lost a set in their three matches so far this season. They began the day with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-14 win over Colby Sawyer, and then followed that with a 25-18, 25-22, 25-22 victory over Cobleskill.

Match 1: WPI 3, Colby-Sawyer 0

The Engineers registered double-digit kills in all three sets, led by a game-high 14 kills from Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH), who hit .393 for the match. Wetmore was joined in a balanced attack by Suela Miloshi (Needham, MA), who had six kills to go with three service aces and a game-high 19 digs. Olivia Deckers (Marlboro, MA) also got involved with five kills and 12 digs, while Renee Sawka (Westford, MA) and Paige Garland (Nashua, NH) added four kills apiece.

The offense ran through sophomore setter Catherine Reynolds (Concord, NH), who piled up 29 assists to go with four service aces. Lilly Taylor (Weymouth, MA) had five assists while seeing action in one set.

Match 2: WPI 3, SUNY Cobleskill 0

It was more of the same in the evening session for the Engineers, piling up 18 kills in the opening set and nearly doubling their opponent in kills and assists. Reynolds added 30 more assists to her totals, spreading the ball around to Wetmore (9 kills), Miloshi (8 kills) and Deckers (8 kills).

Paige Garland (Nashua, NH) chipped in with five kills, while Veronika Gorski (Southington, CT) had a pair of kills and didn't make a hitting error. Reynolds also tallied three kills on five swings without a miscue.

WPI boasted four players with double-digit dig numbers, including a team-high 19 from Jia Yazon (South Windsor, CT), 16 from Deckers, 13 from Reynolds and 11 from Miloshi.

Yazon and Kaleigh Hess (Berea, KY) led the team with two service aces apiece, and Hess was in on three block assists.

The Engineers complete their play at Elms tomorrow when they face the host Blazers at 2 pm.
