The WPI Department of Athletics is proud to continue its 2025–2026 Athletics Celebration, a daily series highlighting the top moments from each varsity program's season. The celebration will also recognize each team's Ray Cherenzia '73 Award honoree and selected programs' major award winners, as chosen by WPI Athletics' head coaches.
Top Moment: Roethlein's Four Hits Lift WPI Past Eastern Connecticut
WPI produced a decisive 12-5 non-conference victory over Eastern Connecticut on April 23 at the New England Baseball Complex.
Zachary Roethlein collected four hits as the Engineers turned a close contest into one of their strongest offensive performances of the spring.
After moving ahead 3-2 in the fourth inning, WPI broke the game open with five runs in the fifth and added four more in the seventh. The win highlighted the lineup's ability to build pressure throughout the order and rewarded an afternoon of timely hitting, aggressive baserunning and sustained execution.

Ray Cherenzia '73 Award Recipient: Jack Twarog
Jack Twarog was selected as the baseball program's recipient of the Ray Cherenzia '73 Award. The honor is presented to a member of each varsity team who exemplifies the spirit of an "unsung hero"—someone who works hard every day, puts the team first over personal goals and performs the often-unrecognized responsibilities that are vital to the team's success.
Twarog's selection recognizes the consistent effort, selflessness and character he brought to the program as a student assistant. His behind-the-scenes service supported the players and coaching staff throughout the season and reflected the team-first dependability celebrated by the award.
Senior Day: Baseball Recognizes 10 Seniors
Before the May 2 doubleheader at Granger Diamond, WPI honored a 10-member senior class for its commitment and contributions to the program.

Jack Twarog were recognized during the Senior Day ceremony.
The recognition celebrated a group whose impact extended beyond the final results. Through their leadership, preparation and support of teammates, the seniors helped shape the daily culture of WPI Baseball and represented the program throughout their collegiate careers.

Jack Zawacki was selected as the NEWMAC Baseball Player of the Week after batting .632 during a 3-1 stretch with 10 runs, 12 RBI, three doubles and two home runs.

Brian Riley earned All-NEWMAC Second Team recognition after emerging as one of the league's top relief pitchers. Riley posted a team-best 1.90 ERA across 16 appearances, compiling a 2-0 record with one save and 22 strikeouts in 23.2 innings.

The Engineers earned the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award after posting a program-record 3.74 team GPA. The honor marked WPI's third ABCA academic team award in four years.
